[Edited: not a bug] Off-map air attack

Post by iberian »

Ok, I've found a bug that i'm able to reproduce sometimes:

- Start the Novorossisk scenario
- With Russian naval bombardment, eliminate the two step fortification on top of the 58 Eng. Romanian battalion.
- Now land one Russian unit next to the Romanian bat., but do not disembark it (don't press the anchor).
- Use an off-map air attack against the Romanian 58 Eng. battalion. You will see that the Eng. bat. sometimes attacks with direct defensive fire the adjacet Russian unit (a little green arrow is printed over the axis unit). When this happens, if the air attack is succesful, the Romanian unit does not loose a step.

This is shouldn't happen because:

- The Romanian unit is not capable of direct defensive fire (no purple dice).
- An air attack shouldn't generate a direct defensive fire (much less against a unit which did not attack).
- I didn't even land the Russian unit!

In the attached picture you can see that, once landed, my Russian unit lost two steps because of amphib attrition, plus a third step due to the direct fire bug triggered by the air-attack against the 58 battalion.

Did the air strike miss (as they do from time to time) and hit your own unit?   This is a logical explanation of what you've described.

Hi JSS,

I believe you are correct. [&o]

Soviet Air attacks have a 30% Scatter Chance in good weather in this scenario, and what I'm witnessing is just an example of it. The green arrow that is printed over the attacked hex was confusing me, leading me to believe it was the effect of a direct defensive attack. I edited the title to reflect that this is not a bug.

As the maximum authority on theatre, I ordered the inmediate execution of the IL-2 Shtormovik squadron commander that confused my landing craft, still at sea, with the defensive ground positions of the Rumanian battalion.

Thanks, JSS.

Well done Comrade. That air commander was obviously a fascist stooge and wrecker and your decisive action has been noted.
