Two problems

Actually, 1 problem and 1 oddity.

First the oddity. I have only just started playing SPWAW and I am still on the initial tutorial. The US have a vehicle called M2 60mm MMC. This is not in the encyclopedia however. As far as I can tell it's a LVT 2 with an added 60mm mortar. It's not a problem - I just wondered why it isn't in the encyclopedia.

The problem I am having is with the artillery screen. It usually takes several mouse clicks to get anything done. For example, it takes four or five mouse clicks to nominate the target area, it takes four or five clicks to select HE and it take four or five clicks to exit the screen. This is getting really annoying.

Is there something I can do about this? I am running 8.403 plain.

Best wishes,

The first issue you mention is a problem with running an older scenario with newer OOBs. That unit used to be in the set way back when, but was removed because it's an a-historical one (it didn't exist). For updated versions of the Tutorial Scenarios, see this link:
SPWAW Enhanced Forums - Tutorials

These will require the use of the SPWAW Enhanced DV Mod; the mod can be found at the same forum here:

Thanks, I thought it was something like that. Any thought on my second problem?

Actually I have another one. My aircraft fly from right to left irrespective of what I set their entry and exit points to be. This can't be right surely?

Edit: OK, solved this one by doing a search. Assign entry and exit hexes before selecting the target. And generally, if I understand this correctly, do air first before arty. Which just leaves me with the problem of the bombardment screen being very temperamental and not recognising mouse clicks for most of time. I assume that most people don't have this problem. I found a thread on SPWAW.com a few years ago and the general advise was to turn off all programs running in the background. However, I made sure everything was shut down and even used End it All to kill off a load of stuff, and still I get a problem. I would welcome any advice.

Best wishes,

Shunwick,

There is no solution for Problem #2.  It has been a problem for years and is a known problem.  You just have to be persistent with your artillery clicks and be patient.

Alby,

I'm having to deal with the artillery click problem right now in my current game using Enhanced DVRN.  Oh well.  I've had to deal with it for so long that I've almost gotten used to it.

If you have an artillery click problem (this is the third or forth time I addressed a cure) try an older mech.exe file. in Spwaw.....worked great for me. For some reasons one of the latest gives some machines artillery click problems.

Chief,

I haven't got an older mech.exe as far I know anyway.

IIRC, I had that issue with my first computer that I had SPWaW installed on. This one, back before I went totally Linux, did not. This was on two different video cards as well, as I changed from the integrated 128mb thing to a 256mb high end card. No problems after the change, and actually less than before, with "blackouts" and such. I'm still ironing out issues with my hardware in Linux (which wouldn't be an issue but for the fact I went in blind in regards to the new OS), so I haven't checked how well I can get SPWaW to run in Linux's WINE 'emulator' just yet. For me, it ain't worth playing unless I can hear those BARs spit fire at the BBEGs.

SPWaW 8.403 Patch Notes:

1) In some screens, the scroll delay was not functioning. Fixed.

I thought it was some delay in the artillery screen?

I think the scroll delay problem referred to the speed of scrolling the map. That is, when you set the scroll delay to slow down the speed in which the map scrolls, it didn't carry through to the bombardment display. This was fixed so that both the main map and the bombardment map scroll at the same speed.

Shunwick:
In the main SPwaw folder is a file called mech.exe, just below it should be mech.exe.bak. If you installed the mods via Mod swap it should be there.
What I did is made a copy of the orig mech.exe and put in in a "new folder".
Then I made a copy of mech.exe.bak and put it in "new folder ".
This way I had them safe so I could return to original setup if anything went wrong.
Then I removed the mech.exe file form the main spwaw folder leaving the mech.exe.bak, at this point I erased the .bak, (only .bak), and restarted the game and it cleared up my problems.
Then I went to the "new folder" and made a second copy of mech.exe and renamed the file mech.exe to .....mech.exe.bak and stuck it into the main folder in case I want to return to using it later.
Sounds like a lot of work, it took me bout 15 mins, unfortunately "I CANNOT GUARENTEE IT WILL WORK FOR YOU".
It seemed to me and was reasonable that if I did not have a delay problem before installing the mod and that the main variable that could effect the game was mech.exe, (all others OOB,LBM, SND files etc.), did not effect the mechanics so to me it was an obvious choice. Just out of curiousity if you revert back to the previous game version, prior to making any mech.exe changes, with Mod Swap does it play normally ? The reason I ask, is that by swapping back you utilize the mech.exe.bak that were talking about and if it plays normally then viola, it should work as noted above.
PHEW ! Sorry to be so winded, Hope this helps you.
PS: Since I usually play versus the AI I don't know if you'll get a security violation against a live player.

Chief,

I hesitate to mention this because all you guys have spent a lot of time trying to help me out but...

I don't have mech.exe.bak in the SPWAW folder. In fact, nowhere on the hard drive. I didn't use modswapper to install the 8.403 patch, it came with its own self-installing thing.

I downloaded enhanced FV and enhanced DV but I haven't tried to install them yet. Do these come with an alternative mech.exe? I could try one of these via modswapper.

Edit: Just found a thread cunningly named FAQ: Techinical Issues which suggests setting mech.exe to win98 compatibillity. I'll try this first.

Best wishes,
