Trivial UI question...

Just wondering, more to stop me looking for it than anything else, is there a way to exit a scenario in-play to the main menu without actually exiting the game?

I wish.
All of the DB and now this game still has this "feature".
It's definately a pain in the arse.

Unfortunately no.
Save your current game, exit the game and then enter the game again.

There is. And it was in BiN as well, must have been in BiI and KP as well.
I works against the AI only AFAIK.
Save your turn.
End your turn (big red button)
Before seeing the AI's turn, close the AI's resolution controls (little cross in the middle of the right edge of your screen)
You'll have the message : "Do you want to exit the scenario and return to the start screen?"
Here you are.
Tricky but it works. Only against the AI.
In hotseat mode, you have the option to go to start at each seat change IIRC.
In PBEM mode, the game automatically exits when you send.
I hope this helps,
JeF.

Well, there's a way to do what you ask, but it is "buggy".
If you press the next turn red button, you will be given the option of starting the emeny AI turn. Instead of pressing the "Play" feature to see the enemy turn resolution/movement, there's an "X" small button that, if pressed, asks you if you want to go to the main menu.
It used to work fine in BIN/BII, but is broken now. In fact, any other game that you load or start after doing this procedure will behave strangely (as in seeing enemy units that your shouldn't see)
So... it's better to close the program and start it again.
