I recently bought the game and downloaded it and the patches. When I hit play, I get the following error message.

Application has generated an exception that could not be handled.
Process id = 0xca4 (3236), Thread id = 0xdc8 (3528).
Click OK to terminate the program.
Click CANCEL to debug the application.

Cancel fails to debug, so I'm left with OK, which ends the game but leaves the main menu up.

Based on the DxDiag, your video and audio drivers are from 2004, so I would definitely update both to make sure they are DirectX 9 compatible.

Second, did you make sure to allow the .NET and DirectX installations in the installer to run? Those include special components that are required for the game. If not, you can find them in the game's /redist sub-folder where you can run them manually (or uninstall and reinstall, making sure they are checked).
