American Front (US PO) test

4 August - 1 September 1914 (to T 5)

Turn 1 is a cease-fire during which to position your troops, and dig in.
Elmer needs a lot of time for that, later he plays smoother.

There's been some heavy naval duels on the Atlantic coast; I wanna protect the port of Norfolk-Virginia. Both sides have lost many ships.

It's only the beginning of the campaign and so there's still room for manoeuvre in the main theaters.

Lots of heavy but indecisive fighting in New Mexico and in the midwest.
In the great lakes area the outnumbered Canadian-British formations are under heavy attacks and the US has made some important gains.

On the "Atlantic" front I'm trying to advance along three axis and hit the US' production by capturing cities with a * or + in their name. These affect supply and replacement.
Washington was a sweet victory and the door to Philadelphia and New York seems to be wide open, but due to fog of war I'm unsure about what Elmer has lined up to welcome me.

A US counter attack west of Winchester is bothering me. If I'm not mistaken this is one of the US formations programmed to sweep behind the CS lines in an effort to isolate the Army of Virginia.
Unit density is not that huge right now which allows for these kind of operations.

US raiders in Texas. A Mexican army has been sent to protect Amarillo and stop a US advance.

On popular demand [;)]

Grandpa Veers and his buddies are doing their best.
Ottawa is in danger but a daring raid by the 1st Canadian River Sqn into Yankee territory is bound to disrupt their supply lines

I'm holding the line quite well on both sides of Lake Erie.
The Yanks are also trying to advance towards Winnipeg but the 3rd Canadian Army managed to fend them off.

And in true Larry Fulkerson style, here's the minimap showing both sides from turn 1 through turn 5.

This really gets me wanting to try this one! (If only I had the time). Watching it unfold will be the next best thing, however, so keep up the fine reporting! :D

I hate the 1st Canadian River Sqn, it causes endless grief to the American player.

[:D] guys!

Nice to hear you got it going Jeff.

The original non-PO is available here

http://www.the-strategist.net/RD/scenarii/display_scenario.php?menu=off&Id=670

It's designed in ACOW, so it needs to be opened and subsequently saved in the TOAWIII editor to convert it to run under TOAWIII.
If testing goes well, the PO mod will be available soon. Balance is OK cuz Tane crafted a solid scenario.
It's the events I've added to make it suitable for the PO which I wanna see unfold.

6 October 1914

(map 1)
The offensive through Maryland is going well, Baltimore being under attack. I secured the left flank and am mopping up US pockets of resistance.

(map 2)
Things in Canada look gloomy.
The US forces have advanced along a wide front.
The understrength Canadian forces scrape together what they can to defend Ottawa: reserves, engineers etc.
On the left side of the US line there is the only decent unit left, the 9th Inf Div but hopeless out of supply. Alongside them some rough dudes , the Ontario guerillas.
The first aircraft have appeared over the battlefield, which perform valuable recon flights.

(map 3)
More reason for concern: Arkansas.
While concentrating to capture the US stronghold at Poplar Bluff -which is the gateway into Missouri- some US units have bypassed my front on the left by marching through the dense forrests of Arkansas. They're clearly going for Little Rock and also Memphis, Tennessee might be in danger.
So far I only spot a cavalry and security unit but I'm sure there are more of them. No planes available to check it out.

More from 6 October 1914

-US forces broke through the Canadian defenses at Windsor, northbank of Lake Erie.
The Canadians pulled back and are trying to dig in as fast as possible, but are outnumbered.
-Elements of the XI British corps landed in New Brunswick. (if the war in Europe goes well for the Entente -set by a series of variable events- you receive reinforcements in the off-theater area on the east side of the map)
I plan to use them for an offensive in Maine, probably after the winter.
-Winnipeg is under attack but Canadian forces are moving into Dakota and to Minnesota, bypassing US forts.

Screenie:
The southwest is a mess. US troops struck deep into Mexico but were beaten badly by CS and Mexican forces.

The Northwest on 6 October 1914

Russia send their V Cavalry Corps stationed in Alaska (Russian territory in this timeline) to aid in the struggle against the US, but these are making a poor showing.

The US are moving towards Vancouver. To distract them the III Sibir Corps landed 2 divisions near Aberdeen, moved inland but are countered by the US Westcoast defense.
The Siberians are ordered to dig in and stay put.

The mobile part of the opening phase will come to an end soon as the weather is set to deteriorate.

My first conclusions and tips:
-I wished I had been more careful with my riverine units. I lost most of them during the opening weeks of the war. They can be very handy in disrupting the enemy's rear lines.

-I have to be more defensive in the Great Lakews region. Not enough combat units.

-The air units need to be treated the way they acted in WW1... recon -fly 'em over enemy lines if possible, they reveal front lines and hidden units, avoid combat assistance.
They have only a small impact on interdiction.

-Different fronts, different terrain and conditions... it's like playing 4-5 scenarios all at once.
Great scenario!

G'day mate,

I'm glad you're enjoying the scenario, your hard work and mine. Funny thing is I've never played a game of the finished version. When I finish playtesting AF40 and helping a friend playtest his, I'll give it a go.

Anyway, it's looking good, well done mate,

I'm glad you're enjoying the scenario, your hard work and mine.
You created a smasher.
Although both forces have their own characteristics it seems well balanced... it's gonna be interesting what's gonna happen when it'll go into 1915, with more reinforcements coming in, the disbanding of the conscript units, and of course what the events gonna make of it: the course of war in Europe; will the US increase conscription rates (set on a 50% chance); the US offensive etc

I seem to have set the PO almost right, only a few small adjustments needed.
Funny thing is I've never played a game of the finished version.

When I finish playtesting AF40 and helping a friend playtest his, I'll give it a go.
Good luck on the 1940 scenario, am lookin' forward seeing that one.

OK, back to the battlefield, lots to be done...
