New Gamble and Scramble Scenario

Hi all,

First off the COTA Patch 3 build 146 is being tested as we speak. If all goes well we will release this patch soon.

Included in the Patch will be revised versions of several of the existing COTA scenarios - Foothills of the Gods, Charge of the Centaurs and Parachutes over Corinth. In Paras over Corinth we have fixed an anomoly ( ie swapped the bridge from the Abn engineer to the LAH engineer ). In the other two we have made some minor fixes ( like resubordinating the 72nd Div Base under its Div HQ - oops ) but we have also taken the opportunity to add several new reinforcement schedules which greatly expand the replayability of these scenarios and offer scope to increase the difficulty level for both sides.

But the big news regarding scenarios will be the inclusion of a brand new scenario called Gamble and Scramble. This is a what-if scenario that sees a major bold counter-attack on the German rear area, targeting Elasson and specifically the Germans resupply line that runs through it. The Allies are taking a big gamble that this will stymie the German push south to Athens and the Germans have to scramble what forces they have to hand and launch a decisive counter-attack.

There's plenty of manouvre, cut and thrust action and scope for command flair in this one. Here's a screen dump showing the Germans counter-attack in full swing.

Hi Arjuna. What does the patch include apart from the goodies above?

I know some are concerned that such a great game perhaps does not have the sales it deserves.

The screen shot above is a classic.  I  SHOULD see the makings of an interesting scenario to wargame.

Instead, what I see is a top down shot of a crowd of people leaving a packed football stadium.

It is messy. It’s a jumble.  People might be trampled. I presume it was an away game for the green and gold team as there seems to be fewer of them.

If you wish to promote the game avoid the jumbled look, among wargamers as the best know feature of the series.

Well you can always imagine 1 km hexes, and neatly stacked counters in them.

No!

In promoting the game a screen shot can look like this:

In promoting the game a screen shot can look like this:

Well, unit counters don't change their size if you zoom in/out, that's why it looks like having several big clusters packed with units, on lower zoom levels.
Still..... better than stacked units in a hex field.
He could have turned off the 1km-grid, but the zoom level he chose provides the best view, so ppl can clearly see that this "what-if" contains a different Axis force-mix (i just spotted the 85th Gebirgsjäger-Regiment HQ) than the historical Elasson scenario, at least.
Given, the promotion for the game could be improved in general, but this screenshot's purpose is to deliver a sneak-preview for a patch only .... and it does the job just fine, imho.

Back to topic: I thought "new scenario" would mean that the patch would include a new map as well, so I'm a little little bit disappointed and surprised, here, as I was looking forward to get my hands on a new area/map.
Oh well, the fact that the scenario ends at D7 almost makes up for that lil negative surprise. [:D]
And no, I don't take freebies for granted. [8D]
