I have not played long enough to experience this yet.....is it a matter of physically spotting the enemy battery units firing on me with my recon units for example?

Are enemy batteries ever exposed simply by firing or must i spot them?

They auto expose when firing. Editor allows setting a % likelihood of being discovered when you fire your artillery (i.e. 10% or 30%). Opponent still must have air or artillery with range to do anything about this though. If you're firing from near max range (with longer range artillery), its very difficult to receive counterbattery during your opponent's turn (unless air assets are available).
