For technical details look at the AAR "A Fight to the Death"
This time it was me playing US. Well, two carriers with a full load of Tomcats, Hornets and attacking birds. This only could end in a massacre for the Soviet side, if the US player remained cool.
I quickly gained air superiority and started to build a massive wall of Tomcats around his CVBG. About 50nm behind I had my Hawkeyes and Prowlers. Every Soviet AC coming close was smoked before it even could see me.
Next was to start waves of Hornets carrying Harpoons and HARMs.
But I had totally underestimated the sub threat. He caught me by surprise and I suddenly had to face two salvos of Shipwrecks heading for my carrier group from totally different directions - Oscar SSGNs! This really can ruin your day. How could they have detected me? The missiles flew in from far over 150nm distance.
Only one chance: Another sub lurking beneath my carrier group.
I was lucky: My Aegis system in combination with some Tomcats assigned for carrier defense got all Shipwrecks. Meanwhile his CVBG got one pounding after another.
Thus the Soviets resigned.
Resumé:
1. Technical: one crash; maybe because the firwall on both PCs had been up.
2. Game Play: Again it showed up that to overcome an human controlled US CVBG the Soviets need a lot support for their ships. In this game they have subs but the lack of a strong land base is just too much.
