Hi,About to wander off to buy a 22" ws monitor. My allows me to buy a mid range price> I'm looking at 2 at the moment, a Viewsonic with 5ns and stereo speakers or a sangsung 2ns no speakers, any ideas folks
just one other thing I mostly play games like COTA and WITP

Funny, I just made this decision yesterday. My choices were the Samsung 226BW and the LG L226WTX-BF. All of the reviews I read said that they were both good but that the LG was a little better. I went with the Samsung mainly because it was $50 cheaper and I really couldn't tell much of a difference when they were side by side.

Also, while most speakers built in to monitors are servicable, they are not great.

Also, make sure that, if you are going to use a DVI connection, the box includes a DVI cable. Of the two I mentioned above, the Samsung did and the LG did not.

Wish I could give you some advice BASB, but I'm having a real problem with this switch to LCD myself. I've put several different size and resolution LCD monitors up next to my old 20" tube monitor and consistently my old tube monitor gives me a much sharper crisper image. I've been putting off getting a new LCD monitor simply because I have yet to see one that is as clear as my old tube monitor. It'd be nice to have the convenience of of a thin light weight monitor but I'm not willing to pay the price of a lower qualitry image.

No. In my old age I've become fairly computer illiterate. Could you give me a rundown on DVI? Thanks.

DVI is a different connector format, its digital (digital video interface), compared to the traditional analog VGA connector. Certainly there is a DVI socket on the back of the LCD monitor. Some video cards do not have the socket tho, so you must have a look at your PC to see if its there. If your video card has the socket then buy a DVI cable and connect up that way, its better quality for LCD.

@BASB, my father just got the 22" viewsonic I believe you are referring to, it looks great, even better than my LG WT22. The 5ns is a good stat. And don't get hung up on contrast ratio. viewsonic is 700/1 ratio LG is 3000/1. I think the companies play around with the ratio specification because I think the viewsonic looks better and has more intuitive controls.

Well Challerain I'm with u, I got a Samsung 226bw puts my 17" crt into permenant retirement, did a few tests, on COTA WiTP Rainbow six and Battlefront. What ointment to my eyes[:D] Actually I might give Battlfront another burl graphics are much easier to read. Play the first chapter of a Bridge to Far just to look at a movie looks cool, and I don't need glasses to use Word. I'm Happy $500 well spent[:)]

Gunny a good thing the DVI cord with the monitor, because it saved me forking out extra to buy a new video cord my old one was fixed to my monitor. Also do u know what the difference in running the monitor in digital analogue equates to?

LCDs must run on DVI ports. Do not use a regular VGA connector or even a VGA to DVI connector. If a LCD is connected via a VGA port of the graphics card then the quality sucks big time. Only via DVI they run on their full quality. Comparing a CRT to an LCD and not run them via the needed outputs is not possible.

A decent LCD monitor on DVI blows away any CRT. I held onto my CRT for the longest time and then unexpectedly had a Dell 20" widescreen side by side and I realized I was hanging on to the notion that CRT was superior for far too long.

Dang!! Looks like I'm going to have to buy a new video card with a DVI socket.

Marc, gunny and FlyingElvis... Thanks for the info. My clunky old 20" CRT monitor just might be sitting on the curb soon waiting for a recycle pickup.

I'd only buy Viewsonic or Samsung at the moment.

It's a toss up depending on price. They both look great. I've owned one of each. The biggest difference I've noticed is that Viewsonics seems to look a bit more 'crisp' as opposed to Samsungs having a little better blending between the pixels. I hear Viewsonic's screen pixels are slightly further apart than other manufacturers so it's just a preference between the look of the two.

I'll probably go with a Samsung on my next one since I can generally save a few bucks over a Viewsonic.

Well you guys talked me into it, I got me a cheap 22 incher, kind of nice so far, still trying to get it all set up the way I want it, but now maybe I can see some of what is going on
