landing tips needed

i've flown the 3rd training mission multiple times but i still end up exploding when i try to land on the planet (not spaceship) runway. i'm at around 300 on my speed and not making any sudden changes in pitch. my gear is down. my altitude is about 15feet when i reach the runway, and i gradually decrease it, but then just explode.

also, when i do touch down, is there a wheel brake i need to engage?

thanks

Touchdown should engage the sequence automatically, if you land safely. There's no wheel brake required.

I have to say that 300 is the speed you should be approaching, not the speed you should be landing, which should be low enough that your craft is falling under gravity even while facing the horizon (assuming you're in full realism mode). If you're in arcade or partial mode, just point at the near end of the runway and bring speed very low -- and when you touch down, try not to be pointing anywhere except towards the horizon (or even above it, so the main wheels can touch first).

I don't think planet landings come up in the main campaigns, however, but then, I haven't played the main campaigns very religiously... after beating Highland, I started Firestorm and that was pretty much it.

You never have any planetary landings during the campaign. The entire campaign is predominantly space based, I wish there had been some more attention towards planetary missions.
