so, I didn't know squadrons had to be upgraded to the A6M8 before being able to upgrade to the Reppu, and i did major RD on the Reppu. Got it 3 months earlier then the A6M8, and noticed i couldn't upgrade...

Now I'm stuck: I would need at least 27 A6M8 to be able to to upgrade all the carrier squadrons to the Reppu (and 48 for land based) but I can't get a single 1, since all factories auto-upgrade to Reppu immediatelly....

Now i have over 1000 Reppus sitting on the pool and no way to upgrade [:(]

Is there any way to stop a factory from auto-upgrading? Anyone know of any way I can upgrade my squadrons to Reppu's?

Go to your preferences and turn "player defined upgrades" on?
 
That's what I did once I noticed I started an AI game with those off.

Nothing to do with PDU, it's turned on. The problem is the upgrade paths: to be able to upgrade to the Reppu you need to upgrade to the A6M8 first, and since i'm unable to produce any A6M8 I'm stuck...

How long until the in-service date of the A6M8 ??

Any CVs appear with A6M8s? Those a/c arive without being produced....

the A6M8 is already in-service, but all factories get instantly upgraded to the Reppu, since it became available before...

I guess there's nothing to be done [:(]

How much RD did you put into getting the Reppu 3 months early?

Three months is maximum, IIRC...

I thought that with PDU on one could skip models ? 

Normally yes, but certain planes are entry's into new upgrade paths, and you must upgrade to them to continue on that path.

I thought PDU allows you to regress to a previous model....

If the Reppu is in the normal upgrade path for these squadrons, try turning the "allow upgrade" button on (as opposed to manually ugprading). At least normally (normally = PDU OFF) the auto-upgrade will skip missing intermediates. I don't have any PDU ON experience, so this may or may not be helpful.

It does allow you to regress, but I think once you've gone onto a different path you can't go back. The Jap army dive bombers are good examples of that, you can upgrade them onto the level bomber path, but not back into dive bombers. And to have the option to upgrade to the rest of the level bombers, they must upgrade to the first level bomber on the path, which I believe is the Lily.

Problem here is that he has not actually built any A6M8s. You do have to have enough a/c of a type in the pool to fill out your air unit in order to upgrade past it. And now he can't go back and build any either. Although you can downgrade air units, you can't downgrade factories, or rather you can, but they will upgrade themselves right back again.

In the dim and distant past I seem to remember someone (poss. Mr Frag or Mog) say that R&D factories were included as an aid for the AI.
It seems that 'extreme' optimisation of Jap production by players does have some pitfalls.
