Age of Rifles - Configure the Sound!?

Post by Von Rom »

Hi guys:

I downloaded the Age of Rifles from the Underdogs site, and everything unzipped fine.

Now I have to configure the sound for the game.

Here's the problem:

My Age of Rifles is in the following location on my hard drive:

c:\Age of Rifles\wgrifle\rifles

But, when I go to te MSDOS prompt I cannot get to that directory to configure the sound.

Here are the steps I go through at the DOS prompt in my feeble attempt to get to the directory that Age of Rifles is in:

1)C:>WINDOWS (what I see when I first activate the DOS window)

2) C:>WINDOWS cd\ (I enter cd to change to the root directory)

3)C:> (I am now at the root directory)

4)C:>cd\AgeofRifles\wgrifle\rifles (This is what I type next)

5)Invalid Directory ( This is the message I receive once I complete step #4).

What am I doing wrong? I'm not the greatest techie in the known world, but I didn't tink it was going to be so complicated. I have tried a number of different entries but nothing has worked.

I am sure that there is probably a step I am not doing, or doing it incorrectly. I would sure appreciate any help if you can. I am dying to play this game.

My system is Win'98, PII 350, SB Live!, Voodoo3 2000. Standard setup.

Thanks

Your mistake is that you don't realize that dos only accepts 8 charactors for the directory name, I'm willing to bet that to change to that directory you can go to the root directory and then cd ageofr~1, cd wgrifle, then cd rifles.

Dos truncates the win95 style long filenames to six char and a ~1 for the first, a ~2 for the second with the first six charactors the same.

Two easy solutions to this are: rename the directories with 8 charactor or less names, or create a .bat file that will jump you to the directory you want to go to, so you never have to type cd xxxxxx~1 again.

I have a voodoo 3 3000 and had to use univbe to trick age of rifles into thinking I had a vesa video card, univbe errors out saying that it isn't a supported video card, but it works anyway.

Just like Steel Panthers 1, age of rifles wants a vesa card and voodoo's don't return the proper response.
thanks, John.

john g: Thanks 'ol buddy for the reply.

After seeing what I did wrong, and the fact that it doesn't matter how many (or how few) folders make up a game directory, I deleted the first two folders (Age of Rifles\wgrifle) and kept only the last folder (rifles).

Then I went to the DOS prompt, and typed in C:>cd\rifles

And presto. . . it worked!

Then I typed in "sound" and I configured the sound. I didn't need those other vesa drivers, it detected my SB Live!.

And then I was playing the game. I have wanted to play this game for years, but could never find it anywhere. I like the game's interface and layout.

What I am really interested in is playing some of those obscure battles.

I highly recommend this game to everyone. It's available at the underdogs:

http://www.theunderdogs.org/

And as a special favour to you john, I also recommend the game "Macheavelli the Prince", also at the underdogs. It is very deep in strategy, trading, economics and political maneuvering.

Thanks again, john g. You made my day

BTW, just one last question.

Does anyone know where I can obtain a pdf manual for Age of Rifles?

No!
But if you haven't, I suggest you go to Norm Koger's Web page and down load the "Universal" 1.04 patch.
I've got the manual so if you have problems let me know and I do what I can.
Played the heck out of that game.
Norm sez it works fine on 95, tried a couple of times with no problems.

Thanks abradley: I appreciate the advice.

After fooling around with the game for a while, I am surprised no one has re-made this game, or updated it. I like the fact they used a woodgrain look for the layout of the game. Well ahead of its time.
