Base defenses

Do these do any good in small numbers, say 2-3 plasma or something, or do you need really large numbers for them to be effective?
Them battlecruisers are still getting thru pretty easily with my three defense stations. I went and sold them off and will rely on my tanks and men for the main base.
Do the UFOs attack you fighter bases?

Yes, they can attack your fighter bases. Once this happens, you have 10 days to send your troops in and eliminate them or the base becomes a fully functional alien compound.

Any base without defenses will get attacked and conquered again and again. Don't build mega-defenses once you liberate a base, that just draws flies (BIG ones). Try and have a few defenses to stop the basic ships from coming in, but keep base costs low. BC and up are too powerful to stop, even with a fully defended base built up with good defenses.

The easiest fight has to be the main base defence. The aliens wont blow open the walls, so I just put troops in front of the doors and wait.

Base defense is not worth it unless you use one of the mods and even then you will need 3-4 current generation defense just to stop and dmaged BC or above. SO I would say forget about it and just look at it as an opportunity to get morexp for your troops.
