Try reinstalling the game over itself sometimes it doesn't always take correctly on the first install.

What version of DirectX are you running? I think the game requirements are for ver 6 and Win 98 installs ver 5 by default. Just a thought try updating DirectX.

7.0 have tied updating vid driver too, there is another one, am going to try it out. When I changed it. actually got a little farther before crashing. Then went back and reinstalled original. Crashes about the same plces each time. When I installed the new driver the game ran until the aircraft made thier run. The first made it through. The second was operating in stealth mode, which I don't remember being available in ww2. it was cool, absolutely invisible aircraft. Just a little ahead of it's time, LOL I also posted on the general post, and have the info for os, bios, etc. there.

Then try deleting the steel.pref file within the saved directory. The game will recreate it upon startup, you'll have to redo your preference settings, this file in the past has caused numerous unexplained enomolies. The only other thing I can suggest at this time is to uninstall the game completely (to included physically removing the SPWAW directory after uninstall and then reinstalling it fresh, I know you said your tried installing it overitself with no help, maybe something is corrupt that isn't getting replaced simply by installing the game over itself.

Last things to check, how much hard drive space do you have left, make sure windows is handling your virtual memory you should have at least 100 meg of free HD space for virtual memory. You can try to turn off your graphics hardware acceleration. One last thing try updating SPWAW to a newer version and see if that might help. Good luck

When the game first is installed there is no steel.prf file. You have to change at least one preference before the game will create it. So I went through and changed all of the prferences one by one, then set them back to what they were on startup. This got me into the fourth turn. My turn, enemy, mine, enemy. I guess at the turnover to the fifth turn, the game just crashed and went back to windows desktop. So the prf does have something to do with it. There may be more than one issue. will continue trying. Will look around and try to find ver 7 to download. Have 20 gig drive, with about 8 left, i have been running a second, 540mb hard drive as the swap file, this increses throughput. That may have something to do with it. All of my other programs have run fine with it though.
thanks

In older versions of SPWAW the steel.prf file when it gets corrupted has caused numerous unexplained problems. What Campaign or scenario are you playing it might be and older one that might have issues with the OOB's (order of battle) files that may be out dated which will cause problems like you describe. Try a different scenario or Campaign and see if it also has problems this can help rule out game problems or OOB issues.
PS There is no full version of version 7 available for download yet but if you click here SPWAW 6.1 it will give you everything up to version 6.1 then you can patch to version 7 or you can do incrimental updates from your version to version 7 from the SPWAW downloads or from The Armor Site

Hey thanks, have started down loading already.
have tried several different scenerios. And tried to do a couple of campaigns. All seem to do the crash and burn. I may have to try to get another video card to see if that does anything.
My computer is a frankenstein"s monster, according to my sister. I assembled it from components. It had been pretty stable, but the Norton and the Ati have not always played well together. It seems to work fine with all of my other programs though. I may have to do a clean install of windows and start from scratch, to see if anything shows up as interfering with anything else. Will burn off everything so it will not be as painful.............

If all else fails try running the game directly from the mech.exe file which bypasses the autorun menu. It's helped some gamers in the past.
