This question is for the awesome scenario Europe Aflame (highly recommend it!)


1) Random purplish circles that look like supply points appear in certain areas (northern Norway) and the Iraqi desert and then disappear. I know they are not sources of supply for either side like Murmansk or New York etc, does anyone know what they are?

2) Also, do all allies draw supply from each other's sources? Can the Russian army in Norway draw supply from the UK?

3) Is it always suicidal to leave fleets out in the open sea? Any way to protect them?

That indicates that the hex in question is supplied.

Yes, in spite of how clever scenario designers get in terms of OOB's, events, etc., there are only two sides in any scenario. The supply points for player one supply all of the forces controlled by player one, and the the supply points for player two supply all of the forces controlled by player two. Depending on where those SP's are placed, the same hex might be a supply source for both players, or only one of the two.

The naval aspect of the game is admittedly more abstracted and less detailed than the rest. However, to protect them from air attacks, make sure you have friendly fighters within range, if they are out at sea. Naval units defend best against air units when stacked in a single hex, but fare worse against other naval units in direct attacks that way. There's a very good reason that naval assets rarely engaged ground forces without either or both of a) overwhelming air superiority, b) overwhelming naval superiority. Naval units that get overused as floating artillery batteries, and left out in exposed situations will generally get the same treatment in TOAW III as they would in real-life, albeit with a bit more unpredictability. Try to eliminate the enemy fleets first, and keep your own under a strong CAP umbrella.

Fortunately, the AA fire in T3 has vastly improved form its older cousins. So, leaving a fleet out to sea is slightly less suicidal than it used to be.

More importantly, it's good to see someone playing soemthing other than FitE over here. (Not that I have a problem with FitE or people that play it).

Hi also have a supply question for EA,my troops in norway (axis) have landed and all seem to be suffering lack of supply eg 12% have captured two ports in southern norway but all units are suffering any suggestions would be most welcome cheers.

The only way for the Axis to remain supplied in Norway, prior to the entry of the Soviet Union into the war, is for the Axis to have control of Oslo.
It is definately worth the time to take a look through the briefing to see where Supply Points are available, before you start the game, and before you start a major amphibious invasion.

Veers, in my game I'm the Allies in early 1942 against Serge as the Axis.  We've proceeded to truly light Europe Aflame, as of February 1942 only Sweden is not at war.  We've also learned a new few new House rules, including the decision to not co-mingle or coordinate attacks between Western Allies and Russian forces.
 
Serge followed the normal path at first, taking Poland & France. I failed in my attempt to take Finland with the Red Army.  Then instead of invading Russia in 1941, Serge forced his troops through to Palestine via Turkey and took the Suez Canal. American & Canadian forces hold the line in Morocco, but Egypt is lost. Franco's Spain also joined the war and Gibralter fell not long after, dealing my Allies a serious blow in the Med.
 
 After Ankara fell Stalin joined the war and Russian troops flooded Syria and Iraq to contain the Third Reich.  My attempt to cut the Axis off from Egypt by taking Syria stalled out, but now the line is drawn from Norway all the way to the bottom of the map between the Russians & Germany.  Without the Barbarossa option, the Red Army also managed to hold the line just east of Minsk and the eastern front has fallen into a stalemate. I would humbly argue that the failure of the Axis to squash the Red Army early will haunt my opponent Serge in the near future...
 
Recently my American reinforcements landed and retook Narvik, before handing it over to teh Russians to defend. The Red Army outmaneuvered the Finns and Petsamo and now all of Finland is threatened from the north.  It won't be long before Sweden joins the war on the Axis side!!!  So quite an exciting game, very fun to rewrite history!
 
How about you Veers?  Are you playing? I would consider a game sometime too, Serge and I have two games going but that is my only TOAW going on...

A very interesting game indeed. It will be interesting to see how '42 and beyond play out.

Unfortunately, I have a moretorium on new games right now as I already have too many going on, as well as being particularly busy at work. Perhaps in the future.

As for my current games I have four that are Europe Aflame.
One is very early (Allied).
One is late in 1940 (Axis) with Poland, France, Norway, Spain, and North Africa from east to west, under my control. I have only the USSR to conquer.
One is also late in 1940 (Axis) and I am in the middle of the invasion of the USSR, having failed to take the UK with Operation Sea Lion.

The last one I am playing against the creator of the scenario, it is mid 1941, and it has been very exciting.
Mark took Poland and then launched into the invasion of the USSR. this caught me by surprise, but I was able to put a halt to his advance with the aid of winter. In Spring of '40 I pushed him back to a line just east of Leningrad-Smolensk-east of Kiev-the line of the Dneiper. Winter of '40-'41 saw a Soviet Offensive that wore down his Army Group South across the Dneiper and left the Soviets along the line of the River Bug.
After the failure of the Axis invasion of the USSR and the consolidation of the line there, the Axis invaded France and took Paris after a bitter struggle. After the fall of France the Commonwealth concentrated on North Africa. After dealing the Axis a fatal blow with the total destruction of the Deutch Afrika Korps around Bardia the Commonwealth streaked across the desert with all but one of the available Commonwealth Corps (This during the winter of 40-41). When the Allies took Tripoli the remaining English Corps invaded French North Africa at Casablanca and started advancing towards Tunis. Tunis was taken, and the campaign in North Africa put to a successful end, in May of 1941.
Norway was taken by the Axis, though it took them until late '40 to complete its conquest, and the USSR-Finland border is largely where it started.
With the conclution of the North African Campaign, the Western Allies were content to rest up and prepare for the eventual invasion of Southern Europe. The Axis, on the other hand, was not. In July of 1941 German troops invaded the UK, taking London, while Spain threw its lot into the ring.
It stands now, three weeks after the German invasion of the UK with the Germans pretty much toast in England, the Americans in the war (due to the fall of London and entry of Spain), Portugal nearly finished, Gibraltar threatened, and the Spanish in North Africa nearly finished.

Lots of people have. One of the failings of earlier versions of EA was its slight imbalance in favour of the Axis.
