just wondering what kind of strategies everyone uses when starting a new league? Focus on pitching early or hitting? Look for certain positions or certain categories for different positions?

There are so many variables here. For me, personally, the ballpark environment played a part in my drafting strategy. I went for starting pitching and overall offensive/defensive performance. In other words, a balanced roster.

The most important thing is to draft starting pitchers early that are young and will produce for a decade.
Your first pick should be a pitcher that is as close to this description as you can get.
You'll be amazed at the quality of position players available even if you show the discipline to take pitchers early and often.
