Campaign Question

If the same Campaign (Scenario 17, 19, etc.) is begun, say, 10 times...in play against the computer...will your computer opponent do the same exact thing 10 times? Or is there a randomized factor where once he may go after one strategy/target the first time and another time he may select another strategy/target? Similarly, do your opponents TFs begin in different locations? Do your opponents aircraft and ground forces begin in different places? Etc.?

Thanks.

Here's another question...I thought I did this before but I don't remember the specific technique.

How do I assign way-points to a naval TF?  For example, if I want to go from point A to point B...but I don't want to go in a straight line...I would need to set up some sort of interim destination hexes to pass through...all except I can't figure out how to do this.  Anyone know?

(Note: I searched the boards here and the manual but didn't find a methodology to accomplish this.)

You can set way points by setting a TF to patrol do not retire so that when it reaches that point it won't back track.  Then give it orders from there.  I haven't played against the AI for so long I don't remember it's moves.  All units start in the same locations all of the time in the same scenario.

The computer will never do exactly the same thing always because there are so many variables such as losses in combat that come into play. However, the AI will always goes for the same primary objectives because it is following a script.

The script is easily changed however with the scenario editor. It is in your SCEN folder. For example in scenario 17 the Japanese A.I. puts too much emphasis on Gili-Gili in my opinion. So, I change that and give it another objective.

Like Brisbane for example. [:D]

Or if one waypoint is all you need, set the destination to the waypoint you chose and the home port to the final destination. The TF will goto that point in the middle of the ocean then directly to the destination.

That seems like a good way to work in a single waypoint. Thanks.

Just how easy is it to change the UV script? Is it intuitive, or do you have to know MS C++?
There are several UV scenarios that I would like to alter, i.e., more IJA attention to taking Buna and holding Guadalcanal.

It's this easy...

OK, I just deleted all my dumb questions after finally finding where Ike99's attachment is from: it's from the UV Campaign Editor.

From My computer, open the UV Folder, go to the SCEN Folder, then open the UV Campaign Editor, which should be the icon at the bottom of your screen. In the Campaign Editor, select File, Open File and just select the scenario you want to edit, then click the Campaign Data menu on the far right of the header.

So, all those numbers under the headings of Combined Fleet, 8th Army (Japan) and SOPAC, SWPAC (US) are literally the numbers assigned to UV bases. In Ike's example, the Combined Fleet's targets are 316 (Tulagi) and 317 (Lunga), while the 8th Army is after Gili and Buna as primary and secondary targets, respectively.

So all I have to do is change the base numbers and the UV AI -- either Japanese or Allied, depending on what I'm playing -- will go after those bases, right? I should then get a message box after exiting the edior saying that my data has changed and asking if I want to save it.

I looked at Turning Tide and found the Japanese were after 224, which is Dobadura; no wonder the AI wasn't contesting Lunga (317) or Tassafaronga (322), although the IJN would routinely bombard Lunga airfield. How did that happen?

Here are a few key bases and their UV assigned numbers: Port M (225), Buna (223), Lae (219), Nadzab (220), Rabaul (202), Gasmata (209), Shortland (284), Buin (286).

If anyone has anything to add to my understanding of UV's Campain Editor, please do so as I could find nothing about it in UV's pdf manual.

Hi Joe,

your right, I am suprised the developers don't even point out where the scenario editor is. [&:]

When I was looking at the game features when deciding to buy I clearly read it has a scenario editor. Like probably most people I want one and I for one maybe wouldn't have bought the game without one. So when I got the game I thought for a moment ¨false advertisement¨ [:@]

But I dug for it and found it where you said, in the SCEN folder. Someone from up high should really put this in the documentation somewhere. One current opponent of mine has had the game a few years and he didn't even know the game had an editor. So someone needs to add that to the games documentation somewhere. Also, like you said there is no editor manual, but it is pretty easy to figure out really.

It didn't originally have an editor...

add me to the list of people that have yet to find the editor.

From My Computer, find the Matrix Games folder, open the UV Folder inside, go to the SCEN Folder, then open the UV Campaign Editor, which should be an icon somewhere at the bottom of all the other files. In the Campaign Editor, select File, Open File and just select the scenario you want to edit, then click the Campaign Data menu on the far right of the header.

The Campaign Editor has a building icon that looks like a skyscraper; can't really understand why that symbolwas chosen. The Editor is not on your game disk, but on your computer's hard drive.

Ike99, for some reason the folks at Matrix treat the Campaign Editor like a state secret; I've had this game for years, but never realized what or where this feature was.

If you open the Leaders tab, you can see the real strengths and weaknesses of your admirals and generals. Perhaps Matrix thought this was a "cheat."

So, before I start "readjusting" my game, has anyone actually tried the Campaign Editor? Has it worked?

Is there any way of altering a/c stats and production rates?

Works for me. I modified the scenario 17 to have the historic midway result to play by myself as the Japanese. Makes it harder.

Yes

Ike, I assume you used the Insert, Remove and Find buttons at the bottom of the campaign Editor to eliminate the IJN carriers lost at Midway from #17. I think you can remove any unit or leader -- land, sea or air -- from the game as well.

What are a/c stats? I didn't find anything re production rates in the Campaign Editor. I'm sure Miller will want to know how to change them.

I think I'm going to reread all the historic info for each UV scenario, and then make sure that the objectives for the Combined Fleet/8th Army/SOPAC/SWPAC match it.

One final thought: the "About" option on the Campaign Editor menu stated it was Version 2.0 and not supported by Matrix games, so use at your own risk. In that case, I'll make a new System Restore point before tinkering with it. Worst case scenario: I uninstall and reload/repatch the game; I've had plently experience of doing that w/the latest 2.5 patch.

Yes

Care to elaborate[;)]

I know you can alter the type of a/c a squadron will fly but I am not aware of being able to alter an a/c's speed, weapon loadout or durability figures. Also being able to change an a/c's replacemet rate or the time it first appears in a scenario would certainly breath new life into the game.....

After changing the AI's primary/secondary objectives to better reflect the historical situation in the scenario briefings, I had a hard time trying to save the altered scenario, even after answering yes to the pop-up msg box asking me if I wanted to save my new (changed) data. In fact, I couldn't save any readjusted scenario in it's original slot, so I had to rename it and save it in one of the mutitude of unnamed slots; perhaps that's what they're for.

Anyone else experience this w/the UV Campaign Editor?

The new scenarios seems to be playing well, and all game data was transferred to them except for the historical notes and photos that were in the originals.

No, in the delay box put in 9999. That means the units will never arrive in the game. That's what I did.
