I noticed that one or two genearals for the USA don't have a home state listed. I don't know if this is an error, but wanted to point it out. A. Pleasenton is one and there was another but I can't think of the name right now. I'll go check and list it when I get a chance.

Weird. It looks like there's at least a dozen of them. Since I didn't work on the initial generals file I don't know whether this was intentional or not. I'll have to check into this.

I noticed this before, but thought maybe they were from overseas, never gave it much thought that it might be something just overlooked. Anyhow, Hancock is one also, and since he would be one that the Union player would tend to promote quickly, it might be nice if he was associated with a state, so as to get the promotion kudos from that governor, also.

Most (or all?) of the foreign generals were living in one state long enough that they should be assigned to that state (as I assume has been done). Guys like Carl Schurz were living in the U.S. for some time before the Civil War started. (Source: the bios project)

I volunteered to do the general's home-stating, and sometimes it was tricky determining this.

What about generals from overseas? From off map western territory?  There was at least one general born in DC...what to do with him?

Also, a lot of the pre-war US Army officers tended to be a rootless sort, living in desolate far western garrison posts, having lost all interest or connection to their birth state, in many cases.

Basically what I tried to do was see if their was a particular state the general was sufficiently beholden to, politically (after all, that was to be the game impact at stake here) and made that the "home state" in cases of doubt.

A good example of this principle in action was Fremont. He was actually a senator from California before the war, but instead, I home-stated him to Missouri. Why? His wife.  She was the daughter of a very influential and powerful Missouri senator, and this gave Fremont clout in Missouri.  Hence, Fremont's home state for game purposes is Missouri.

I made a lot of these sorts of compromises. The main thing I tried to keep focused on was the state the general's political allies and backers (if any) hailed from. That tended to be (but not always) the birth state.

And it's quite probable I made mistakes and misjudgments along the way...so if anyone notices a case for a correction along the guidelines set forth above, please speaketh forth!  [:)]

Oh, I didn't remember that you're the one who handled generals' home states. Well, in that case, there's no need for me to bother checking into this, and I'll wait for people to make specific recommendations for changes (if there are any).

Can we assign some homeless generals to those states having few or no generals? I had a governor (Delaware)who was mad at me for ignoring his demands and I wanted to raise his attitude by promoting  generals from his state: I only found one - Sykes. So that didn't help me much. The Western states probably have few if any generals.

That would have to be a mod -- I don't want to have anything in the database that I know to be inaccurate.

Dang! I was in the game and forgot to write down the other general I saw who didn't have a home state. I'll check tomorrow and get back to you!

Why not show the generals home as outside the US if that was the case? If they arrived prior to the war and moved around a lot I think that would be the best solution.

Corrections might be needed as the "Generals Biography Project" continues. It will seem rather silly if someone digs up useful biographical information that ties a general to a state, but then he continues to be listed as "unaffiliated". I do want to say that I like the way "jimwinsor" made some of his decisions re: political clout precidence (sp?) over birth state, but since I'm from Missouri, I'm disowning Fremont... [:D].

edit: I'd gladly trade Fremont for Hancock.

lol. Good work on the project btw. I always forget to mention that when it comes to the hard work people do for no money.

I have not had a chance to contribute to that project, myself, too busy playing the game, noting improvement issues and flaws here and there, and working a rotating shift in Real Life, but appreciate the work they are doing, also. Their contributions save time for the programmer/developers to concentrate more on "Game" issues, but still adds to the overall flavor of the game. Great Help.
