Why didn't I notice this before?

Possibly because I seldom use the LINE formation.
I've just given this regiment a defend order and set the formation to Line as below

And this is how the units are forming...
Why are they so close to each other? Have I "over-extended" the line? Are they refusing to form up in the area I specified?

Stupid question - did you set depth and frontage for this order?

Yes...depth is 1000m and frontage is 1500m

Stanegly enough, I set the same orders to another regiment further north and they had the same formation layout and were going to do the same...all destinations seemed to be in the same hex, but they have now started to fan out....so maybe I'm just being impatient. I guess the positions shown are the "forming up" positions.

Try to toggle depth/frontage. I found units to be very reactive and precise, that's why i like line formation [:)]

This may be a sequencing issue here. When units are orders to defend ( in whatever formation ) they must first move to the location and then they deploy into the assigned formation. For the preliminary Move they will probably move in road column. The end locations for the sub-units however are based on Vee formation representing the fact that at the end of a Move the force will deploy into a local defensive position. This is what I think we are seeing. Let the game run on and let me know whether the units fail to deploy into line after they get there.

Well, I couldn't tell if those particular units would've deployed as ordered, because they came under heavy attack and spent most of the next few hours retreating and recovering.
However, as I pointed out above, I gave a regt to the north the same order (larger frontage) and when I checked them they had the same deployment footprint as the pic above, however, they did have time to take up defensive positions and did move to the correct locations....line, 2000m frontage.
So it seems you are correct and it is I expected...they have to move to the location before moving into final positions.
Thx Dave.
How's the new job? Enjoy the 9 'til x schedule or just the pay?

JudgeDredd,
No the 9 till 5 is OK, but the travel to and from is a killer. Let's face it nothing beats the 60 seconds it took to walk to the office when I worked from home all those years.[:)]

60 secs? It takes me all of 5 seconds to get to mine. Do you provide golf carts for the army of maids to move around your house as they clean it? [:D]
