Does the player control land based air assets such as those that would be found at Midway, Henderson Field, Rabual?

Yes, or you can assign them to AI control in single player games if you wish to concentrate on the fleet operations.

I've been taken by surprise quite a few times by unexpected land based strikes - but I'm learning fast
