Beginner modder

I posted this in WITP room too but, I'm seriously thinking about trying to do a mod of my own but I have NO experience at "from scratch" modding.

The first thing I want to try is working on my own art work. I have fooled around a little bit in other games so I'm not a total newbie. However, I believe in going to the experts first. What do all of you art work modders use to create your art? Specifically what software and how user friendly is it.

First off I would want to create my own map. Not too ambitious of me is it?[8|]

I've been using GIMP. PS might work as well.

What era and what area of the world are you thinking of?

your best bet might be to go to the war in the pacific forum - that place is mad with activity and is absolutely crawling with modders, especially art modders. not to say you won't get responses here (as you did while i was typing this), but you'l get a lot more action there.

but to start with you might just want to browse the

C:\Program Files\Matrix Games\War Plan Orange\ART

folder and check out what art is with the game - you may not need to ask questions once you see what's in there

I used to mess around with PACWAR, editting and the like, but I'm feeling a bit more ambitious here at the ripe old age of 35.  Since I've got the summer off from school, I figure I start a project, get in waaaaay over my head, and then see what happens.

Haven't really decided yet. I might turn back the clock a little bit, or i might go forward. Just trying to see what all I might need to invest in first.

Do you own WPO and WITP? The main difference from a modder's point of view is the eligible dates that can be set (not that they really affect game play per se). In WPO you can set a date from 1900 to 1939 (or somewhere close to there). In WITP you can only set the date after the dates available in WPO.

I have both and regardless of date I am planning on using the WPO engine simply because of the greater emphasis on surface firepower.
