Why go to Port?

I've seen the option to send a TG to Port, but why? Does it repair damage or re-fuel ships? I have re-read the manual a few times over but could not find this covered. Also, the manual states TG's can run out of fuel and if they do they are limited in speed (5kts?)...is there more for the player? Do we send them to Port to re-fuel or are they just slowed for the remainder of the scenario?
Thanks in advance, i have never played CAW before now

Going to port doesn't repair damage, as scenarios don't last long enough for this to be an option. You will refuel in port. Going to port is generally done to get ships out of harm's way.
For instance, imagine if you as the US at Coral Sea have won a crushing victory, sinking the two Japanese fleet carriers and pounding the invasion force. You don't want to hang around, as there might be submarine attacks, or maybe a light carrier unaccounted for that could still spoil your day, so you just head to Townsville. There's no sub attacks in port and there's land based air to help protect you, while you savour your victory.

[:)]Gotcha...Thanks! I can see what you mean, in my current game of Coral Sea i pounced on a Jap Carrier group with a BB TG after i softened them up with airstrikes. While lurking around to "finish" them my TG was decimated by attacks from all directions...Oops. Superb game...this is truly what i have been looking/waiting for ever since finding my beloved Witp.
