I just had a surface combat where the US 8 inch cruiser Portland started hosing down Japanese destroyers with its 20mm Oerlikons!! [X(] [X(]

You just have to love the combat model as though the graphics aren't flash there appears to be a bit more going on behind the scenes than you realise.

The situation was the (AI) Japanese were desperate to resupply a base so they sent in a large fleet of APs escorted by DD, MSW and PGs. After savaging the convoy with LBA, I sent in a 4 x CA surface force that night followed by 3 x CL with escorts.

Though the APs were lined up, the CA engaged the escorts first. It helped to have achieved surprise and combat was initiated at a range of 2000yds. With torpedos from the escorts and 8", 5" and 40mm shells flying as well, it was not a good time to be Japanese. I don't even think they got a chance to reply!!

Once half the escorts had been swept away (all the engaged ones), the CAs then engaged the APs at 7000yds which I thought shows some intelligent spatial awareness.

The CLs then swept in and again achived surprise and engaged the remaining screen escorts at close range (obviously came in from a different direction). Once these escorts were overwhelmed, the range opened up again as the cruisers broke through to the transports.

Though this game isn't the latest release, I feel that gameplay is still very strong and will stand it in good stead for a long time yet!! (particularly if they keep updating it like they have).

Poor relation to WITP???? I don't think so..... just different emphasis on the same topic!!

Yup, each game has it's own merits.  I like the idea of all guns blazing away.  Did you leave anything floating besides debris?

Yes, after all these years UV is still a great game.

I still play it - and I have had some spectacular naval engagements: sitting near my computer monitor cheering on my ships as they go toe-to-toe with the enemy - shell splashes in the water; falling on ship decks... the pain of seeing ships sinking....
