The Ending

SPOILER ALERT
For those who have completed the game -- don't read this if you are still fighting -- there are SPOILERS ahead... I need your opinions:
I was really let down by the apparent loss of the entire squad at the completion of the final mission. "Not Cool!" as the caveman said. I suppose I can award them all posthumous Medals of Honor, but it was a shock to see the mother ship explode and take everyone with it. Ok, ok -- it's just a game. But after putting in quite a few hours to get my folks to the "brain" I'd like to be able to at least try to get them back in the shuttle and to Earth. There ought to be a timed exit mission wherein the squad has to return to the shuttle in the face of a multitude of opponents, or at least a cut scene in which the shuttle zips past the remote camera as the mother ship explodes.
This is not to say that I won't probably play the game a few more times, but the ending seemed like it was rushed. What do you think? I am reminded of the end of Rome: Total War: 200 years of blood and intrigue leading to a "Hey, you're Emperor now -- good luck!"
Great game, disappointing ending. Thanks for letting me vent.
