Ship damage without being attacked?

Has anyone found one of his ships damaged without being attacked?
I noticed this recently at Midway. The Japs came nowhere near my TG but the Yorktown somehow suffered a black damage bar.
Could there be another reason for this - like a crash landing of a damaged US plane on recovery?

Hi Adam,
Some ships begin the scenario with damage. If you review your forces from the singleplayer setup screen, and mouseover the carrier symbol in the 3rd taskgroup, you'll see that the yorktown begins the scenario with 1 damage bar.

The Yorktown damage was a bomb that went deep during Coral Sea. That Coral Sea damage, I believe, also limited the top speed of the Yorktown to something like 28 knots. The flight deck was fine...
The VP count assigned to carriers is a puzzle. The Lexington / Saratoga are worth a lot more than the Yorktown / Enterprise / Hornet. Huh? The latter carried more aircraft, making them worth more as carriers. They were also superior carriers in other ways, having been designed as such.

Agreed on the VP mystery. While Lex and Sara had a lot of sentimental value to the Navy brass, traditions and such, they certainly weren't as valuable as the others.
