Dual role of the Dauntless

If the Dauntless is my primary scout plane, once I have fixed an enemy carrier's position, can I bolster the number of SBDs available for later strikes by turning off my rosette?
e.g., If in a scenario (this is purely hypothetical), I have two TGs in close proximity to each other, and I have multiple sightings to the point where I pretty much know where the enemy carrier force is, would it be a viable tactic -- or even an option -- to have one of those TGs click off all of its vectors so that its scouting Dauntless dive bombers could be used offensively? This shows how much of a noob I am. But I've read that most crews were crossed trained -- they could perform either role.
Thanks
Matt
