A question

I am still working my way slowly through the game - really enjoying it. Also I am really enjoying the forums and activity with this game. For whatever reason Battlefront (which I own and like) never seemed to generate this much activity.

My question - I am playing the Wake Scenario as the Americans (played the Japanese twice and won handily both times). The Americans are much harder to play - at least I hope their harder or I really suck at this game! Anyway, is there a reason to arm Wake Island and Midway Island? There is an arm button but does it mean anything if the squadron to be armed can only fly CAP or do Searches?

I just thought of a second question - when playing the Japanese I had a question with searches. The task force with the Carriers has ships with planes that have search capabilities besides the two carriers. At times some of these planes were idle and bombers from the 2 carriers were used for searching instead. Is this by design? Also, whenever I checked the squadron screens for planes not from the carriers, there status always said "Idle" even if they were on search missions. Is this a flaw?

Lastly an observation - I have a widescreen monitor and I have been using the following zoom numbers 1, 1.01, 2, 3, and 4. 1.01 gives me the ability to use my whole width of my screen without any hex distortion. The map fits perfectly width wise (though I have to scroll vertically.

Thanks for any help

Jack

Hi jcrohio,

I love a good forum too!

It is definitely important to arm your bases. However you're right with regards to Wake as there isn't any land based air power there that I can see.

But check out Midway! [8D] There's an awesome amount of land based air power there and used well, it can turn the battle.

Re ships with planes you need to set up seaches manually by using the directional dial. You could decide to launch searches from all planes or even leave the carriers off. That's up to you to determine whether you're searching sufficiently well.

Can't help you with the zoom though. Check the support threads as IIRC there is something there to be fixed.

Cheers,
Adam.

You should probably arm the fighters on Wake, if you're certain that a strike is imminent, there's not many of them so they need the best possible chance to be in the air when a strike does come. Otherwise just put them all on CAP.

You can consider doing that at Midway too, it's going to get struck sooner or later, you'd rather have your planes in the air rather than on the ground when that happens.

With regard to searchers, the system does preferentially use floatplanes from the Japanese surface ships, but this doesn't guarantee that they'll always be in the air and that no bombers will have to be used. For instance, if a searcher spots a TG it starts to shadow it, and new plane is launched in its search sector. If all floatplanes were committed to the initial search, the replacement may have to be a strike aircraft. Similarly, when floatplanes return, there may be no immediate requirement for search aircraft, but they should be top of the list when that requirement does arise.
