Iwo Jima changes name........

TOKYO (AP) - Japan has changed the name of the Pacific island of Iwo Jima to the original name of Iwo To given by locals, who have become disenchanted with the popularization of its modern-day moniker by such movies as Clint Eastwood's recently released "Letters from Iwo Jima."

The new name in Japanese looks and means the same as Iwo Jima - or Sulfur Island - but sounds different, the Japanese Geographical Survey Institute said.

The institute announced the name change on Monday after discussing the issue with Japan's coast guard. An official map with the new name will be released Sept. 1.

Iwo Jima was the site of the World War II battle immortalized by the famous photograph by Joe Rosenthal of The Associated Press of Marines raising the American flag on the islet's Mount Suribachi.

Before the war, however, the volcanic island was known as Iwo To by the 1,000 or so civilians who lived there.

They were evacuated in 1944 as U.S. forces advanced across the Pacific. Some Japanese navy officers who moved in to fortify the island mistakenly called it Iwo Jima, and the name stuck. After the war, civilians weren't allowed to return and the island was put to exclusive military use by both the U.S. and Japan, cementing its identity.

Never satisfied that the name Iwo Jima took root, locals took action in March after the release of Eastwood's two films "Letters from Iwo Jima" and "Flags of Our Fathers" spotlighted the misnomer.

"Though we're happy for Iwo To, which has been forgotten by history, the islanders are extremely grieved every time they hear Iwo To referred to as Iwo Jima," the local Ogasawara newspaper reported at the time.

Ogasawara, the municipality that administers Iwo To and neighboring islands, responded by adopting a resolution making Iwo To the official reading. Residents and descendants of Iwo To evacuees petitioned the central government to follow suit.

"These people are now scattered nationwide and are not able to go back to Iwo To," said the survey institute's Mitsugu Aizawa. "These people have said that the place is originally called Iwo To and their claim lead to this revision."

Today the only inhabitants are about 400 Japanese soldiers.

The 1945 battle for Iwo Jima pitted some 100,000 U.S. troops against 22,000 Japanese deeply dug into a labyrinth of tunnels and trenches. Nearly 7,000 Americans were killed capturing the island, and fewer than 1,000 of the Japanese would survive.

The Americans occupied the island after the war, and returned it to Japanese jurisdiction in 1968. The U.S. Navy still uses an Iwo To airstrip to train pilots who operate from aircraft carriers.

In the light of this fact I demand for the complete historical accuracy of this game that this be patched NOW to reflect the true name...........[;)] [:D] !

Nah... the game doesn't change the names to "true" current names - just what they were (or thought they were) during WW2... [:'(]

Next thing you know, they'll start calling it "The Battle of Bull Run" instead "The Battle of Manassas".

Sheesh.

The Battle of Iwo To does not have the same ring to it. But I guess if we had been saying Iwo To for the last 60 years then it would probably be alright.

The American planners would not of known that the Japanese garrison was calling it Iwo Jima, think they would of gone with what Rand/McNally was calling it at the time as they briefed the invasion commanders on where they were going.

Agree with the lack of ring. I don't know Japanese well but, no matter how you pronounce it (Iwo 'toe' or Iwo 'too' or even Iwo 'lajdpwop') it just wouldn't sound the same.

No offense to the islanders, but, much like Burma/Myanmar, I'm still going to refer to it as Iwo Jima.

That's what I was thinking. How would the Americans know, in 1944, that the Japanese garrison "suddenly" started calling the island Iwo Jima instead of it's "real name" from 1943 on back - Iwo To?

Sounds like a lot of malarkey to me, and I find it hard to believe that the Marines in 1945 were so politically correct that they felt it necessary to keep up with the Japanese "name de-jur".

It sounds like even the Japanese were confused when they encountered the symbol for the place - so why would the Americans translating do any better?

They probably looked at the Japanese maps and translated into sounds the same way the Japanese not familiar with the place did - Iwo Jima.

Funny I've heard it referred to as just Iwo on lots of occasions. So maybe we should just call it Iwo everyone who is anyone will know where we are talking about. [:D]

I think you nailed Brian...........Military Intel. (now aint that an oxymoron [;)]) wouldn't have cared and in most cases they used existing maps (such as in the 'Canal) that probably had the Rand McNally as Mark stated.

As far as the jarheads go they probably didn't give a rats ass what the Japanese called it.........in fact we probably couldn't post what they really called it............[;)] [:D] !

Well, if you change names to current ones you will have some funnier things... like Ho Chi Minh Ville for Saigon, and Russian names for Kuriles, and so and so...

Don't even look at Africa.

While looking for old Pacific charts I came across this:

and

http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/historic ... a_2003.jpg

I also found this:

Name
Traditionally the name was I¨t¨. Prior to the 1946 spelling reform, a historical spelling was used resulting in (approximately) Iw¨t¨ (modern I¨t¨). An alternative name Iw¨jima (modern I¨jima), where jima is alternative reading for t¨ (?u, t¨?), also appeared in nautical atlases. This Iw¨jima reading became mainstream when the American forces arrived during World War II. Former residents protested this name. The Geographical Survey Institute, under the control of the Japan Coast Guard, debated the issue and formally announced on June 18, 2007, that the official name of the island would be restored to the pre-war name I¨t¨ (Iwo To).

Maybe a bit inflamatory to say as much, but it's probably a flavor of the erasing of WW2 from Japanese history.  Considering their portrayal of WW2 over the last 50 years, to me at least; by reverting back to a name that few have ever even heard of - it's just one more way of making it as it it (WW2) never happened.

the article says the origin came from the locals who never appreciated having the name of their home changed by the mainland Japanese who came to fight. How does that suggest revision of history?

perhaps because they are no longer locals (nobody there but some soldiers) ... who knows who actually wanted it done?
