I'm wondering why there is always a contradiction between the Mission Results and Mission Ratings? What exactly does each refer to which causes a "Well Done" and "Bad" result for the same mission?

Let me guess, it was a terror mission?

If it was, you are penalised very severely for the amount of civilians killed. I nearly always get 'Bad' or 'Very Bad' on Terror Missions, but I don't think it effects funding or anything. So basically you can ignore the Mission Rating.

I always get crappy ratings for terror missions but I go to them all. Except once when I had two on the far side of the world and I didn't have time to go to both.

Perhaps the Well Done! is for the troopers being promoted and not for the mission itself.

You are right that it was a terror mission, but I must say that there were a good 3 or 4 civies already dead right outside my transport before I even had a chance to disembark...they did not stand a chance....[;)]

Going on a Terror mission, even if the civvies all die, is better than not going at all.

Funding will be greatly hurt if you do not go, but only slightly hurt due to a Terrible mission end (provided you win the mission).

Yep, it is pretty much impossible to keep the civvies alive. It depends on the alien type and the starting location of the aliens and the civvies. I once had a terror mission in which EVERY SINGLE CIVVIE survived. But that was basically a fluke...
