A note to the British - carry on.

Without getting into anything political, I just thought I would note that during the news coverage of the terror attacks in London and Glascow, the American reporters on the major cable news networks noted several times how Londoners were going about their business as usual. (Not to slight Glascow. A few people on a couple of other forums I frequent were thinking it would not be good to make Scotland mad.) To all British forum members, carry on, and Godspeed.

To alter your usual routine because of the attacks is a victory for them...by not doing this, I have one thing to say...GOOD SHOW WHAT, WHAT!!![8D]

Stiff upper lips. Dunkirk spirit. Home Guard training or ARP warden duties after a gruelling shift at the tank factory. A bomb shattered shop-front with a cheery "Don't mind the mess, we're open for business" sign. All for real.

They're resilient folk the English. It must be the weather. [:D]

I look forward to the day when people stop taking Iron Age mythology seriously. Just watch the news on any night and count how many of the bad-news stories involve religion. Most of them. [:-]

Cheers, Neilster

We British are! [;)]

Thx for your thoughts people.

Over the years, Scotland has pretty much been left alone with regards to terrorism. The IRA and other factions in Ireland have had a long bombing campaign against the UK, but contained to Northern Ireland and England.

I guess this shows clearly once again that terrorism knows no bounderies!

Fair enough. I deliberately said "English" because I didn't know about the Glasgow attack. Usually you lot aren't too keen to be lumped in with the Poms. [:D]

The Empire was built on tea [:D] It's no coincidence that the Commonwealth shrank with the advent of readily available coffee in the post war years[:D] Also the coffee in our ration packs is terrible....

JW, Goblin et al,

thank you.
It is always very touching whenever some loony-inspired incident happens here that our friends in the US are always the first to offer support and sympathy.
Bless you all; it doesn't go unnoticed.

It was Reported that a chat line used by radicals gave mention to that. But they also gave a half-dozen other reasons. If there is not a reason(in their warped minds) they will make one up. Usually going back in history to some remote time and place where they were oppressed or offended.

Glad to hear all are safe in England. I hope your government has no problem going into those areas (in England) to feret out the responsable parties. No political correctness needed.

Hia Guys,

They wil never understand how to beat us ;)

The ENGLISH are feeling the pinch in relation to recent terrorist threats and have raised their security level from "Miffed" to "Peeved." Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to "Irritated" or even “A Bit Cross." Londoners have not been "A Bit Cross" since the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies all but ran out. Terrorists have been re-categorized from "Tiresome" to a "Bloody Nuisance." The last time the British issued a "Bloody Nuisance" warning level was during the great fire of 1666.

The UK would never give in, we have a secret weapon, the Joke that kills!

Funniest Joke in the World

Opening Scene:
A suburban house in a boring looking street. Zoom into upstairs window. Serious documentary music. Interior of small room. A bent figure (Michael Palin) huddles over a table, writing. He is surrounded by bits of paper. The camera is situated facing the man as he writes with immense concentration lining his unshaven face.

Voice Over:
This man is Ernest Scribbler... writer of jokes.
In a few moments, he will have written the funniest joke in the world... and, as a consequence, he will die... laughing.

Ernest stops writing, pauses to look at what he has written... a smile slowly spreads across his face, turning very, very slowly to uncontrolled hysterical laughter... he staggers to his feet and reels across room helpless with mounting mirth and eventually collapses and dies on the floor.

Voice Over:
It was obvious that this joke was lethal...
no one could read it and live...

Ernest's mother enters. She sees him dead, she gives a little cry of horror and bends over his body, weeping. Brokenly she notices the piece of paper in his hand and picks it up and reads it between her sobs. Immediately she breaks out into hysterical laughter, leaps three feet into the air, and falls down dead without more ado. Cut to news type shot of commentator standing in front of the house.

Commentator:
This morning, shortly after eleven o'clock, comedy struck this little house in Dibley Road. Sudden... violent... comedy.
Police have sealed off the area, and Scotland Yard's crack inspector is with me now.

Inspector:
I shall enter the house and attempt to remove the joke.

About now an upstairs window in the house is fiung open and a doctor, rears his head out, hysterical with laughter, and dies hanging over the window sill. The commentator and the inspector look up and then continue as if they are used to such sights.

Inspector:
I shall be aided by the sound of sombre music, played on gramophone records, and also by the chanting of laments by the men of Q Division...

(Points to a group of dour looking policemen standing nearby)

The atmosphere thus created should protect me in the eventuality of me reading the joke.

(He gives a signal.)

The group of policemen start groaning and chanting biblical laments. The Dead March is heard. The inspector squares his shoulders and bravely starts walking into the house.

Commentator:
There goes a brave man. Whether he comes out alive or not,
this will surely be remembered as one of the most courageous
and gallant acts in police history.

The inspector suddenly appears at the door,
helpless with laughter, holding the joke aloft.
He collapses and dies.
Cut to film of army vans driving along dark roads.

Voice Over:
It was not long before the Army became interested in the military potential of the Killer Joke. Under top security, the joke was hurried to a meeting of Allied Commanders at the Ministry of War.

Cut to door at Ham House.
Soldier on guard comes to attention as dispatch rider
hurries in carrying armoured box.

Notice on door:
"Conference. No Admittance"

Dispatch rider rushes in.
A door opens for him and closes behind him.
We hear a mighty roar of laughter...
A series of doomphs as the commanders hit the floor or table. Soldier outside does not move a muscle.

Cut to a pillbox on the Salisbury Plain.
Track in to slit to see moustachioed top brass
peering anxiously out.

Voice Over:
Top brass were impressed. Tests on Salisbury Plain confirmed the joke's devastating effectiveness at a range of up to fifty yards.

Cut to shot looking out of slit in pillbox.
Camera zooms through slit to distance where a solitary figure is standing on the windswept plain.
He is a bespectacled, weedy lance-corporal (Terry Jones) looking cold and miserable.
Pan across to fifty yards away where two helmeted soldiers are at their positions beside a blackboard on an easel covered with a cloth.
Cut in to corporal's face-registening complete lack of comprehension as well as stupidily.
Man on top of pillbox waves flag.
The soldiers reveal the joke to the corporal.
He peers at it, thinks about its meaning,
snickers, and dies.
Two watching generals are very impressed.

Generals:
Fantastic.

The UK would never give in, we have a secret weapon, the Joke that kills!
They actually did reveal the killer joke:

First German: The Furher's dog has no nose.
Second German: How does he smell?
First German: Awful!

and then there was the counter killer joke:

Zvie peanuts were walking down the strasser.
Und the first peanut was assaulted.......peanut.

I may have these backwards, does anyone else remember? It's been decades since I've seen the sketch.

Seriously, we Yanks will always stand beside the Brits. We are irrevocably tied by a common bond of history and brotherhood. And besides, as an American I am very proud of my Scots-Irish/English heritage. The United States is my country but the Isles are my roots.

You are correct...we don't. But it does rather annoy us when we are lumped in together when we shouldn't.

It's...erm....complicated! [;)]

Actually I have found this to be true of a great many Americans that I have known! After all, after chucking us out, you did come to our aid when we needed it every time and vice versa and look at the langaue you speak! Its "almost" English lol ..............You even forgave us the burning of Washington and we forgave you the heinous crime of throwing te overboard ;)

On a serious note, it is funny that these people simply do not get it! The more they do this stuff the harder the resolve not to give in becomes as a nation! They are pushing the Caliphate further and further away! Mind you I think the Islamic flag over 10 Downing street would simply not look correct!

OK, I'm of Irish heritage, so I have mixed feelings towards "The Empire", BUT, to change gears, it took my fandom of the Rolling Stones to turn me around and begin to appreciate the roots of the blues, rock n' roll and jazz which took place right here in the colonies.

The "special relationship" will always be. Britain and America will always stand or fall together.

You guys burned New Bedford too. Probably should do it again for old times sake.
