ONe of my soldiers have had a heavy laser for a while now but all the others have either Ion rifles or eeew rifles but the walkthrough only recommends the heavy laser and says ignore the rest. Is there a better heavy weapon than the Laser ???

A heavy laser's damage rating is 95
A heavy plasma's damage rating is 110
A heavy Ion's damage rating is 120
An AKEW rifle damage rating is 125
An EEEW rifle damage rating is 130
A particle beam rifle damage rating is 145

Judge fir yourself if it is worth it, but you should have plenty of plasma weapons on hand once it is researched...of course if you are playing an IRONMAN game, then you will not want to research past what the walkthrough suggests....

Your UFO encyclopedia gives you the stats of all the weapons you have researched.

oh, and just for the record - once inquisitors comes in you can kiss your life goodbye since lasers seems to do 0 damage to them...
you probably mistook it for a UFO:Enemy Uknown walkthru in those you had like two weapons - plasma and laser, and a bunch of people said to stick with the lasers but i'm one of "those" that stuck with heavy plasmas...

as for better heavy weapons - so far, the only other heavies i've got are Flamethrower (sucks), Chemogun (sucks too), Heavy plasma (neat but...), Heavy Ion (meh)

the downside of the heavy plasma is that once you get them you'll have plenty of other better stuff like ion or akew for instance...

I built a few AKEW but eventually you find enough EEEW from the enemy. Then, slowly but surely build up a stock of Particle Beam rifles. Do not use them a lot, and save on ammo. Then, for the Final Missiions I had 10 Parti Rifles, enough to outfit most everyone. And plenty of ammo. Parti Rifles are the best, but they and their ammo take a long time to make.

I did not stay at Plasma or Ion for long. Barely used them.

Thing is, the hardest fights are with the lasers, primarily because they are weak against the second-half critters.
