is it possible to play (well) either side of this game and NOT have to actively watch the turn ? Kinda like WitP where I can fire off the turn, and go do other things and come back and see what happened .....

well, you could if you are on the Off side (Ge in BoB, Allied in BTR)
the Defending side, sort of needs to be there (unless you turn the game to AI control)
the defender, responds to what is going on, during the turn

Not really, though it might be something to do later.
Unlike WITP and UV, this game has approximately 3,600,000 discrete map points, rather than a few hundred hexes, so combat is hit or miss. Each plane is tracked each minute of each flight, so the processor needs to work out everything constantly. If we turned off the actual screen updates, we'd save some time and processing power, so it's worth thinking about, but many of us like to watch it play out, so we're not looking at it at present.
edit - and what HS said...

thanks for the reply ....
pity though, like a thinking game, not one of reaction on a grand scale .....

The offensive side is pure thinking. The defensive side isn't 'finger twitch' school of reaction. You can pause, have a good look around, look at the radar reports in detail, etc, so whilst it is 'reactive', it is no where near your average RTS. Also, a thinking defensive player will do far better than the 'tank rush' school. For example, get your tactics wrong with bomber destroyers in 1944 as Ge, and you will get them massacred. You have to time it well (and I don't mean mouse click reaction time type timing, I mean 'assemble the ZG groups over here and there, and when the bombers get to that point, order the intercept). A few seconds out doesn't get you, it is using them inappropiately that gets you! (Hope this makes sense)
