After watching "Letter's from Iwo Jima", I was amazed with the scene of the Japanese launching a huge Mortar shell that hit a US Tank.....I think this was the weapon that was used IRL.....320mm.....incredable[X(]

Excellent movie BTW....[:)]

Spigot mortar... Same basic type of weapon as the British spigot on the Churchill AVRE.

While mortars can be nearly as accurate as a rifle(contrary to SPWAW), the Spigot-types were never quite so accurate to hit a moving tank..That was a lucky shot..
BTW..I have seen a good mortarman fire a round within 10 feet each side of a man sized target with NO ranging rounds..

I could once play havoc with the 60mm..

Do you include the IJA "knee mortar" or the CW 2 inch weapon as real mortars - or inaccurate grenade throwers?

Incidentally, IIRC if you fired the Japanese one from the "knee" you'd get a broken femur.

You are correct, that it could not be fired from the knee..

I remember my dad telling us about them huge mortars. He said the only thing you really had to worry about was being buried by them. He said they were so big and slow you could see them coming and move out of the way.

I was extremely disappointed with Letters... I really think Clint just took the completely wrong angle on it..  You dont get a feel for the battle at all when you see it I think. But..thats just me I guess

Sorry..., but the title "Japanese Mortar Grenade"  bugs me every time I see it.   A mortar round in this calibre is a shell..., not a grenade.   I'm guessing the poster's confusion arises from the round of the Jap 50mm Grenade Launcher (knee mortar)..., which was literally a hand grenade with some attachments.

Unless you're British, in which case its a mortar "bomb". Always seemed appropriate to me...

True..., but that could lead us to the "Mill's Bomb" and more confusion.

It was "To the point" what more do you need? More is just fluff.

P.S. Basically I was not pleased with "Flags of our Fathers"

Flipper

THANK YOU! I don't know why..., but every time I looked at this forum that title was grating on my nerves. Sometimes the silliest things get to me...

This would expain why the Brit's kept using their 2" mortar all through WWII.
