If I have troops that are not at readiness level 9, should I pull them away from fighting even if they are close to full strength? TE artillary is knocking down some readiness in my units on France's side before I attack(if it is too early to use the ability to trench, what else can I or should I do?

If you're planning an offensive thrust, you may want to keep them there. If you decide to pull back some units out of artillery range, the enemy may attack the hex if it deems it vulnerable. While ideally you should attack as close to a readiness of 9 as possible, it isn't always possible. The enemy aren't always as cooperative as you'd like, and often send over a few HE artillery shells at rather inconvenient times.

The manual says that you should definately not mount an offensive with Corps below 5 readiness. Obviously, anything higher than 5 is that much better. Makes for some tough decisions sometimes.
