HQ's Units & Supply

I have had this question on my mind for awhile, so since I have the time today, I will throw it out there....
The manual states that if a BN HQ Unit for example, is not on the map because it has not come into play as reinforcements or was killed by the enemy ect.. That the units in that BN will look to find the next higher HQ's say the Reg HQ.
My question is this: If a BN HQ unit is on the map but out of range, will the unit still look for the next parent HQ, or because the BN HQ is on the map it just simply is out of supply
without checking any other higher parent HQ's?
Can a unit be supplied by a higher parent HQ by itself?
Do all HQ's units check supply to their Parent HQ,
if so when does the chain of supply end? Does the highest HQ on the map automatically supply off the map boundries? I ask this because I try to deploy Reg & Div HQ's to supply BN Units that are out of supply range of its BN HQ or is this a waste of time?
