Has anyone had any success with mixing RAF NFs into the bomber stream (similar to their historical use)? Does this tactic actually work?

It works, absolutely.

Any advice on operating heights. I've tried with the NFs at the same height as the stream and staggered up to 6000' above the bombers. The only successes I seem to have are when the fighters bounce a Jerry trying to land [:(] Whilst it's easy enough to swat them as the land I'd like to get some before they get in amongst my bombers and shoot them up.

I've always just stuffed them into the bomber stream at the same altitude. Otherwise, they lose contact and don't detect attacking German NF's.

depends on a few things:

A/C used by the Axis
tactic ( bounce vs direct and Bomber vs Fighter ) used by the Axis
time of the game ( Zahme Sau works best from around 4/44 onwards )

Many Axis A/C have Schräge Musik cannons - when they use bounce they may attack from below => so it is a good idea to put some NI below the stream

and there are many more things.......light factor, flight time ( fatigue ), morale issues, AA fire, coned by light,etc....
