Both of these Titles are excellent, but they are both dead or dying from lack of scenario's. No one is hardly posting anything on either one of these games. Here or on Run 5....

I have been unable to play for awhile due to illness, but I plan on returning to the game soon.

Actually, it seems that many games appear to follow this almost ecological boom and bust cycle. The only game forums which seem to escape this process are:
(1) Games which primarily have MP communities.
(2) Games which have very active communities of scenario writers.
(3) Games which have very prolific modding communities.
I would have to say that, at the moment, CAW is none of the above.
But, of course, if for SP you enjoy the game, then nothing else matters. I play quite a number of old games these days for which there are no player communities left in existence. However, I have fun just the same.

Don't forget to include Battle Front in the same category as CAW.. What a disapointment for some really nice game systems????

I'm waiting for the patch before continuing play. There are just too many bugs that become apparent the longer I play. New scenarios obviously would go a long way.

Not true, although of course all the mentioned factors DO help the longevity of the game.
RPG/fantasy games like Fallout or Baldur's Gate/Oblivion are very long lasting even though they don't fall into any of your 3 categories.
Having said that.......
The last thing on my mind is "defending" CAW or finding excuses for the game's dying community. In fact I consider CAW most overpriced, shortest-lived game I have ever played [:@]

The problem is, there are some bugs with the shipped scenario editor; and right now, creating things is a bit counterintuitive; the patch on it's way should fix these problems and make scenario creation significantly easier.

Ive enjoyed playing some older DOS games while trying to forget how much I spent on this title. Aces over the Pacific, Aces over Europe, Great Naval Battles 3, and 1942 Pacific Air war. Theyre all DOS, they run fine under Dosbox, and theyre all free. I started playing GNB3 yesterday and it might be a good replacement for CAW. I havent tried any air attacks yet, but have been attacked by air. Played surface scenarios to get get used to the GUI, but so far its much more detailed than CAW, yet just as automated.

Yes, I fully agree with this analysis.
So CAW is not such a game ... unfortunately.
In terms of online community, how does it compare to War in the Pacific ?

Update:
Got my butt handed to me playing the GNB3 Coral sea scenario during lunch, the air ops are pretty slick.
Some really nice features, you can control how broad the base leg of the search pattern is. You can recall search planes, and strikes. If a search plane finds the enemy you can have it shadow the force or return.
Really reminds me of a WW2 version of Harpoon ANW.
It is free on the Under-dogs site as the 1.1 version, just download the v1.1 to v1.2 patch from the "patch scrolls".

Nice. That's what the Brits did in the Atlantic, their search planes and (especially)
destroyers shadowed German ships, like the Bismarck and other capital ships.

URL?
EDIT: Nevermind, found it. LOL. Quote from their review: "Bug-ridden, it required numerous patches in order to become semi-playable. The entire system seemed to stretch in order to adequately cover the air operations, and since the system was ostensibly for surface warfare adherents, the entire direction of the design seemed to become suspect."

That may be true, I noticed some problems with the 1.0 version from another site. But I will say that a "Free hardcore with a few bugs" title beats the heck out of a "$50.00 Lite with a few bugs" title

True true! [:D]
Hmm, i did not find the patch.... plus I can't get it to run on my rig. I haven't tinkered with DOS games for ages... do I need a special DOS box thingy? What do I need to run it on XP? The sound setup detects the soundcard, but that's all i get to see.

Yes your going to need Dosbox to run it. The first problem I had was remembering to mount the "drive" once Dosbox loads. I just added something like this to the end of the dosbox config file:
mount t: "c:\documents and settings\BK\desktop\dos games"
t:
Athough it might seem like a pain, the nice thing about Dosbox is you can change most of the settings on the fly. So when I wanted to change joystick settings, screen scaling, sound emulation, and but not limited to emulator speed I just type the variable into the command prompt.
And here's the link for the site that has the patch:

Cool, thanks. I've got "Aces of (over?) the Pacific" and other original disks somewhere in my drawers ... Aces, here I come hahaha. [:D]
