I have gotten good at earning points with fighters (about 200-800 points average), and frigates, destroyers and cruisers (all about 500-2000 points average).

I cannot for the life of me however figure out how to make more than 200-300 points with a carrier. Is there some trick to earning points using fighter squadrons? I figured commanding the carrier would result in more point being earned than the lesser starships, but apparently the opposite is true.

Also, is there a def file where I can change the amount of points needed to gain ranks? Earning 250000 points to become an admiral is impossible without replaying the campaigns over and over again.

You can earn command points by issuing commands to ships under your command. I don't know the exact point values and structure, but by selecting and then right clicking on ships under your command you can issue orders. i.e. Move patrol or perform an action.
You can also radio commands, but I cannot say for sure if points are awarded for radio issued commands.

making rank does take time, some choose to replay the campaign, others fly single missions. Point and medals can be awarded outside the campaign, as seen here.

I might suggest not just completing a mission and ending the sim, if you still have ordinance on board and little to no damage then go do some recon. It is possible to find other ships outside of your mission parameters. Medals are given to those who go the extra mile for the cause, so are buku points.

My highest single game score ever came from a single mission and I earned the golden comet award to boot. Just over 10,000 points, most of which were command points.

Experiance will teach you what works, you'll develop your own tactics along the way.

Thanks for the info and advice, but does anyone know if the amount of points for promotion can be changed via a def file?
