I know there are two versions, a Matrix and a Sliterhine, of the update. I got my version from an unrelated 3rd party vendor. Any ideas how I can find out which version of the update I need? Thanks.

If you see the Matrix logo when starting up the game then it is the Matrixgames version else it is Slitherine version.

Can you tell us exactly where you got it and it may help.

I got it from Amazon, more specifically from NWS, the only company selling it on Amazon to customers in the United States. When I start up the games, I see logos for both Matrix and Slitherine. The license agreement and warranty at the back of the manual are with Matrix so I suspect I have the Matrix version but still cannot tell with certainty.

You need the Matrix patches.
