PBEM playback - beta patch bugs?

Hi,

I received my first PBEM move ever today [:)], and came across a few strange things during playback [&:]:

(1) Before starting the playback, I got the idea to zoom in the map using the mouse wheel (I realize now that this might not be useful during playback). Trying to do this, I got the message "Parent unit is invalid", and after a few seconds TOAW was closed down by the operating system.

(2) Again before starting the playback, I wanted to save a bitmap image of the situation at the end of my previous move (as has already been reported, there is no *.sal file automatically generated at end of turn). I used Ctrl - Print Screen, and then minimized TOAW to attend to the image. When maximizing TOAW again, it had skipped the playback, and the map was frozen on the lower-right corner and refused to scroll by mouse or arrow keys. I have not investigated whether it was the Ctrl - Print Screen during playback, or the minimization during playback that caused this behaviour.

Thanks,
Martin

Minimizing, or alt-tabbing during playback is a bad idea. Likewise, when working in the editor while you have various editor windows open. Some of the code from these parts of the program predates Win 95/98 and is not as "Windows-friendly" as most of the rest of the program is.

Thanks for the reports though, and we'll take a look at the behavior noted. It's always good to have first-timers muck about with the game, since it reminds the rest of us old-timers of all the things that we would "never" do. At least not since that time...so many moons ago...[;)]

Yes, timing a workshop with a beta release seems like a good way of getting some dual-purpose out of it! [:)]

That wasn't the idea. Generally the beta patches released are bug-free. In fact, one of the reasons the lads released the beta was so that the Workshop could get going. The idea certainyl was not to have allt he poor rookies test out the patch. The reason I went ahead and started the Workshop with the beta was because I, as well as James and Ralph, expected the beta to be pretty much bug free. As happened it had a coupld bugs, but nothing game-killing.

In any case the lads are working hard on getting out the official, fixed build, and I am, again, confident that they will be done soon.

James,

Browsing thru this forum (which I don't usually do), I've noticed a couple of references (MarGol here), sefirot in (tm.asp?m=1576374), where they both describe the symptoms similar to what Rick and I have seen with my "orphan" AT unit in the new player workshop PBEM game started using the beta patch: an "unknown parent" error in the replay, and/or units showing up on the far left edge of the map during the replay that aren't really there (or anywhere in the OOB?).
