Getting started

Greetings,
after buying the game several months ago I did not got into it in detail, but now after reading some of the AARs I've decided to go for it and finally read through the entire manual as well as most of the threads here on these boards.
I've checked the details of the new uncommon valor scenario, is there anything else changed from 'total war' I should be aware of? Which one do ppl play?
I assume ppl us advanced supply rules, is that right? I'd eventually like to get into MP so I'd like to play as most of those games are played but could not find description in the AARs about the options used in those games.
Also is it worthwhile playing against the AI or should I switch to PBEM after 1 or 2 campaigns against the AI? Is the AI competent?
I might have additional questions as time passes, and I must admit at first glance after I bought the game I was a bit disappointed/confused back then about the board game style of it, but now I feel entirely differently about it, in fact I start favouring it over the real time strategy games I used to play (such as HoI:DD). It is really surprising how that simple but effective engine can simulate the strategical problems and difficulties of the war without going into too mucn detail and micromanagement. After playing Hoi:DD for years I got tired of the micromanagement one had to do every single campaign at a high rate to be effective, not to mention that I was never able to get into MP as it does not have the wonderful PBEM capability and it always had desync issues for me (and the AI was quite incompetent)...
After checking these boards for over a week now regularly it seems that there are quite few new threads/posts,I hope it is not dead.
Anyway thanks for reading through this post and answering some of my questions
