THE NIKE TORPEDO: KNOW THY ENEMY

DECLASSIFIED

What is it?

The Nike torpedo, and its nastier cousin the Athena torpedo, represents the pinnacle of Hegemony arms technology. With a five-kilometre-per-second maximum velocity and a cyclic firing rate of twelve-torpedos-per-minute, it can tear through your defences faster than you can react.

How do I defend against it?

When approaching an enemy destroyer, particularly the much feared Broadsword-class DD, it is critical to remember that the point-defence batteries of the Asher-class, Berents-class, and Spectre-class capital ships are most effective to your port and starboard quadrants. Due to your incredible mobility compared to the lumbering Hegemony vessels, when a Hegemony vessel begins to unload its barrage of Nike torpedos, immediately break course to direct your lateral quadrants towards the oncoming missiles. Your PDBs will make short work of the enemy weapons.

Do not attempt to maintain your firing solution. A Nike torpedo has enough shield penetration to ignore your shields almost completely; your Xasers and Fusion Torpedos are no match in a stand-and-deliver frontal assault between an equal-displacement Hegemony destroyer equipped with Nike torpedos. Break course and ensure your PDBs cover the frontal firing arcs of the Nike-armed unit until you can outflank it. You have superior manoeuvrability. Use it!

What else can I do?

Each Nike torpedo launcher has a magazine of 16 torpedos -- thus, a standard Broadsword cruiser will mount a total capacity of 48 torpedos. If you are cautious and evasive enough, it may be possible to shoot down the torpedos with your PDBs while minimising enemy beam laser damage to your shields long enough to completely expend the enemy's ordnance. However, it is not recommended. The most proven tactic to avoid enemy Nikes is simply to continue to attempt to outflank the enemy and avoid presenting your fore quadrant.
