I am new to this so probably there is something I don't understand but I found playing the Japanese against AI easy. The AI happily launched the full Yorktown carrier force against the Tulagi resupply, which left it wide open to my two carrier strike. Apart from anything else I had no reason to turn back the invasion force for Port Moresby. Maybe they should reduce the number of victory points for that.

Well sometimes they will do the Tulagi strike and sometimes they won't. Sometimes you can spot them easily and sometimes you can't. Play it a few times and see how you, or try playing as the US side, they have a harder job to do.
