combat damage effects

when I attack sometimes a red bar is shown against a ship but apparently it is not sunk as attacks continue. what does the red bar mean ? how cam I get information about shia ship's damage control capacity and how quickly it will control fires?

The red bar indicates the damage your pilots have reported causing. As you can see, they often exaggerate (or mistake) the amount of damage they've caused.

You may be right but then when I click on the results page the ship is shown as sunk. Might it be that the screen shows the results of all the attacks in the 5 minute period?
