1848 crash in VISTA

Hello,
just got a new computer and of course it comes with VISTA. I downloaded a copy from download.com, installed it and fired it up. I choose my game set up and hit the button to start the game and it goes back to the main menu screen. The weekly event/weather pop up appears over the top of the menu and then goes away when I close it. Then, all I see is the main menu, which I cannot manipulate.

I close it out with task manager and it tells me I need D3DRM.DLL and that it does not come with this version of windows.
thanks

Reading the responses to this thread as well the various links and suggestions haven't worked for me. I have Vista64 and tried placing the d3drm.dll in the system32 folder without any improvement in game problems. Game moves to game screen with menu on side and the overall map screen visable on the left, however the big map is black. Also some difficulty in ending the game. Oh well, I will shelve for now and await any Vista fixes. Hopefully they can address 64.

I check back here every now and then to see if any response to Vista 64 issues. The last response here was on May 14th by me. Does any of the people at Hausser Games (spelling?) ever visit this site or are interested in issues? I have 4 Matrix games blocked by Vista64 issues. The last time I visited Costco all of their computers were Vista Premium 64 driven. This also applies to other large chains. I suppose when everybody stops buying some body might wake up at Matrix and developer companies.

For Vista compatibility (all our games), do the following:
1. Right click on desktop icon
2. Properties
3. Disable visual themes - check this
4. Disable desktop composition - check this

The game will run with these settings, but there will be a message about a missing DLL file when exiting. This does not affect the game play at all.
