Does Vista have retro-compatibility mode, like XP does?

Yes you can right click on the mech .exe and run compatibility mode to Win 98 or Xp....etc etc....

From previous personal experience the "Black Screen of Death" has usually meant a corrupt download and/or install. [:@]
As suggested in the previous posts you can go into the games exe desktop shortcut and via the properties screen and set it to run in XP compatibility mode...as well as setting it to run in the administrator mode...and see that helps any.
If that has failed to solve the problem you may have to go the route of uninstalling the game and then re-installing it from scratch. [:(]

PS...in the exe properties screen make sure that you have a check mark in the box instructing the game to run in the 640x480 resolution mode...as the newer graphic cards aimed to run Vista Aero sometimes play havoc with games designed for lower resolutions. [;)]

roll them back...having the latest could be a part of the problem. If that fails then try a re-install. I have Vista too...so I know SPWAW can run on it.[:(]

Also remember to launch SPWAW via Mech.exe or Quick Start (same). Don't use the automatically created shortcut.

Well that answers my question, I just updated to a new computer with vista, and was wondering if SPWAW would work.
I see from other posts that it does.

I run Vista on my laptop as well as SPWAW, and I do have a problem with messy colors on the menu screens when I start the game. However, the screens go back to normal if I select a scenario and then quit it and return to the menu screen. Not sure why this happens, but a minor problem that does not prevent me from playing.

I gave up on using Vista and went back to XP. Everything works better and I'm a happy camper.

Doesn't SPWAW run in 800x600 mode?

It didn't work for me with Ultimate. I got messy colors and couldn't read the screen.

Bet it's your video card/drivers. I have Vista Ultimate 64 bit version and it works fine. I have a ATI Radeon 3870. I used to get messed up colors on my laptop (XP), but they would sort it self out when I selected a scenario.

After several hours of frustration this worked for me on the first try. Thank you (cross fingers).
