I thought I'd start a seperate thread on this as it can be a bit groggy and not everyone will be interested in wading through lots of obscure details.
there's not a lot on the web about the lack of Ukraininan food that the CP was expecting in 1918.
The following NY times articles give some glimmer of what was happening - the first one has some stats on the area under cultivation during the last 3 years of the war, the others are reports from Germany on the state of rations, etc - in one case reporting on debate in the Reichstag the day before as reported through the Netherlands
http://query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-fr ... 946395D6CF - Ukrainian harvest 1923
http://query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-fr ... 946996D6CF – German mistakes in Ukraine
http://query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-fr ... 946996D6CF – 2 month gap until harvest available
http://query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-fr ... 946996D6CF – food not arriving in Germany – peasants refuse to give it up
