Gentlemen!

Starting another PBEM with Nikmod 9.2. My opponent is Swift, who is Austrian also, which I didn´t know before, as I thought I would be the only Austrian here! [:D]


Game settings:

house rules:

max. aircraft on airfield max. 50*airfield size (+about 10%) eg size 4 = max around 220 planes (around means perhaps 223 but not 238!! ); overstacking allowed for transfer, ONLY transfer

max. aircraft in sea hex = "around 450" (= 5 Essex carriers or the equivalent size 9 airfield). I know it´s no problem to stack more than 5 carriers in a hex that is 3600 square miles big, this rule is not because realism it´s because of the game engine. And this rule has worked better for me than a set max percentage of CAP. You still can place 1000s of planes around an island but it reduces the effects of the CAP shields for both sides. When you can place max 500 planes on the biggest airfield on the board why shoudl you place 1500 in a sea hex? If the "leakers" will be "too much of a threat" then this rule can be discussed as it makes no sense that every US CV will be sunk later on by attacks of 100 Betties.

Japanese are not allowed to do strategic bombing in China! Far too easy to destroy all the ressources, HI and OIL. Japanese may bomb everything else of Allied territory.

Allied are not allowed to do strategic bombing of JAPANESE OCCUPIED ALLIED territory. This should prevent the Allied player to do suicide attacks e.g. with carriers to destroy some oil facilities (which I´ve seen enough) and for the reasons mentioned under 3. And I don´t think it would have been possible (politically) to burn down all those Japanese held Allied cities like Singapore or others. Allied may bomb everything in Japan, Korea, eastern China, Thailand = everything Japan held at 1941/12/7. If you want to starve Japan, take the bases or sink the ships!

B29 aren´t allowed on naval attack

B29 only on level 6 or 7+ airfields, this should limit them to places that were big enough in real life.

PT boats max 6 at a base (1x6 PT TF or 2x3 PT TF. Not 6 TFs with single PTs!)

no sub invasions

no mini para drops. As many para drops allowed as wished but they should involve at least 500-1000 men at min.

cutting off units only with "real" combat units, not some 10 assault point base forces...

I will try to do many things different than I did in my earlier games as the Japanese, as I´m tired of doing always the same but this will also lead to smaller and bigger disaster here and there. [8D]

sent my baby carriers and every ship that could carry more than 3 float planes to the hex 120 miles NW of Manila. I set my Zeroes to sweep Manila but the attack from my carriers goes in first. Thank god the US forces are surprised and my obsolete Claudes manage to disrupt the cap. I was already VERY pleased when I saw all those hits on US subs... note that a sub isn´t listed as heavily damaged when hit by a torp. I guess that 99 out of 100 times a sub would sink after being hit by a torp.[:D]

really amazing how many torps were launched, something I never see at Pearl... 20 subs already showed up in the sunken ship list. . With all the more or less failed attacks on Pearl Harbour that I already had to take I decided to not attack the BBs at Pearl. In my game against Hortlund, where I´m playing the Allied, my subs are wrecking complete havoc on the IJN merchant shipping, so I thought the subs from Manila would be a bigger threat than the BBs from Pearl. As a side note, Hortlunds KB didn´t sink one of my BBs either. The British and Dutch subs will be pain enough, the subs from Manila aren´t existing any longer.

... to hit the airfield! I don´t need KB in the SRA to hunt some merchant shipping and if force Z shows up then my Nells will hopefully take care of it. I need KB to cover my upcoming attacks in the Pacific, with 8 US BBs intact I will have to cover every landing I will do in a couple of days as the BBs can go 8 hexes at full speed in one turn, bringing them far down in the South Pacific pretty fast. Perhaps a landing or two could end in a disaster but it could also bring the BBs out and then they will be more easily to sink than in Pearl Harbour with 800 kg AP bombs.

I had all my Claudes on escort to get my obsolete float planes in good condition through the cap over Manila. And I feared to see my Claudes on Cap being shot up by a big escort of P-40 which obviously came in. Would say it´s just pure bad luck to see a B-17C hit Hosho from 15.000 ft. Oh well. 31/0/12, retiring with one DD to Camranh bay.

I think I spent 6+ hours on the first turn (one time the game freezed - of course I forgot to save every 20 minutes and one time I decided to change my initial plan) but still I made A BIG MISTAKE. [:@] I sent a completely unescorted AK-TF with a whole division to Mersing instead of Songhkia (sp?). The disaster isn´t perfect at the moment but I see it coming... [8|] Will have to bring more troops there now... one hex away of Singapores torp bombers... [>:]

I´m lucky that the bombers are all set to 15.000 ft the first turn. Next turn they could chew up my whole convoy. And I don´t know what swift is going to do with force Z. Of course my Nells are unfatigued and set to naval attack as I didn´t order an attack on Singapore as I don´t want to use my Nells on airfield attack. This will be task of my Sallies when I have taken Alor Star in a couple of turns. So this means the British airforce can attack my shipping pretty much unharmed the first two weeks - could be problematic with this stupid invasion.

Swift will surely move in the second Aussie brigade from the hex West of Mersing and without supplies nor reinforcements I can´t break through. Considering already a landing on the West side of Malaya, but this can be considered gamey. Would it have been possible in real life to pass Singapore to do a landing into the hex NW of it? I don´t have the shipping anyway in the next 10 days...

Swift spotted my CAs at Jolo before but he still sends in Houston on a suicide mission at night. She wasn´t sunk by my CAs but by DD Yamagumo which pumped her full of 5 inch shells that penetrated at 5000 yards. Two torps finished here.

First major Allied ship sunk is the CA Houston!

USS Houston (CA-30, originally CL-30), 1930-1942
USS Houston, a 9050-ton Northampton class light cruiser, was built at Newport News, Virginia. She was commissioned in June 1930 and reclassified as a heavy cruiser a year later, at which time her hull number was changed from CL-30 to CA-30. After initial operations in the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico, Houston steamed to the western Pacific in early 1931 to become flagship of the Asiatic Fleet. She served in that role until November 1933, spending considerable time in Chinese waters protecting U.S. interests during the conflict between China and Japan.

Following her Asiatic Station tour, Houston crossed the Pacific to join the Scouting Force. During the rest of the decade, she regularly partcipated in exercises, including the periodic Fleet Problems that tested the Navy's war plans and readiness. She was flagship of the United States Fleet during September-December 1938 and also carried President Franklin D. Roosevelt on a number of occasions in 1934, 1935, 1938 and 1939.

In November 1940, Houston returned to the Philippines for her second deployment as Asiatic Fleet flagship. When Japan escalated its disputes with the U.S. into open warfare in December 1941, the cruiser was sent south to Australian and Netherlands East Indies waters. As the heaviest unit of the Allied naval force in that area, she was actively employed in the desperate struggle against the Japanese East Indies' offensive. A enemy bomb disabled her after gun turret on 4 February 1942, but she remained in the combat zone, fighting off air raids and taking part in the Battle of the Java Sea on 27 February.

The next day, with the situation in the East Indies now hopeless, Houston was ordered to leave the area. Steaming in company with the Australian light cruiser Perth, she encountered a strong Japanese navy force supporting an amphibious landing on western Java, near the Sunda Strait. In a valiant night battle against overwhelming odds, Houston and Perth were sunk by enemy gunfire and torpedos.

I placed KB 4 hexes South of Pearl with the Vals on nav/airfield and the Kates on nav/port attack as I was 100% sure that swift would try to escape with his BBs. They could go 8 hexes, so if he sends them in pairs into different directions it would just be luck of me to catch one. But surprisingly he just had them sit in port again to get attacked. And this once again shows me that the port attack on PH is borked. Only 13 Kates drop torps the 800kg bombs are not enough to really bring a BB into a sinking condition. The next surprise was that around 40%!!!!! of the 800kg bombs hit the belt or another location on the BB that can´t be penetrated. So all those BBs are just lightly damaged. Perhaps the dam ranges from 10-20 at a max. Still they are not as combat ready as if they would have left Pearl. We destroy another dozen aircraft on the airfield but lose a dozen bombers in return also.
Nevertheless I consider the operation on Pearl Harbour a success!

[X(] the Boise came in and a short time I was REALLY worried as she started of firing like wild with my ships not responding, even though WE surprised the Boise. Surprise but we didn´t shoot a single shot, then the combat starts off at a couple of thousand yards and Boise is shot to pieces by 8 inch shells of the Kumano! [&o] The 3 hits that penetrated the CA´s armor did minor damage but still my CAs are getting worn down. That´s why I hate it when an Allied player sends in his surface forces. I prefer to scare them away with my surface TFs and then sink them with Nells/Betties! [8D]

IJN heavy cruisers sink the modern US CL Boise! Banzai!

USS Boise (CL-47), 1938-1951
USS Boise, a 9700-ton Brooklyn class light cruiser built at Newport News, Virginia, was commissioned on 12 August 1938. She made her shakedown cruise to Liberia and South Africa, then transferred to the Pacific to become part of the U.S. Fleet's Battle Force. For nearly three years, she participated in exercises and operations off the west coast and in Hawaiian waters. In late 1941, as tensions intensified with Japan, she escorted a convoy to the Philippines and remained in the area when the Pacific War began in December. However, on 21 January 1942 Boise was damaged in an accidental grounding and had to return to the U.S. for repairs.

In June and August 1942, Boise escorted convoys to the south Pacific, making a raiding cruise into Japanese waters between these operations. During September and early October, she supported the campaign to hold Guadalcanal. Heavily damaged by Japanese shells and a resulting ammunition fire during the 11-12 October Battle of Cape Esperance. Boise once again needed major repairs, which were done at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, Pennsylvania, in November 1942 - March 1943. From June through October 1943, the cruiser was active in the Mediterranean, providing bombardment support for the Sicily invasion in July and August and the Salerno landings in September. She was transferred back to the southern Pacific war zone late in the year.

Boise took part in operations along the northern coast of New Guinea during the first eight months of 1944, bombarding Japanese positions on several occasions and participating in landings at Humboldt Bay in April, Wakde-Toem and Biak in May-June, Noemfoor in July and Cape Sansapor in July and August. In September and October, she supported the invasions of Morotai and Leyte. On 25 October 1944, during the Leyte Operation, she helped defeat a Japanese surface force in the Battle of Surigao Strait. Boise continued her work in the Philippines in December, with landings on Mindoro, and into the first three months of 1945 with operations to liberate Luzon and Mindanao. In April and May she participated in the invasion of Borneo.

Returning to the U.S. in July, Boise spent the last two months of World War II undergoing overhaul in California. She then shifted to the Atlantic, where she helped transport of American service personnel home from Europe. Decommissioned in July 1946, Boise spent nearly five years in "mothballs" before being sold to Argentina in January 1951. Renamed Nueve de Julio, the cruiser was an active unit of the Argentine Navy until 1978 and was sold for scrapping in 1981.

[&o] we capture Alor Star easily, the units there retreat to Georgetown! Great, we have now a level 4 airfield 6 hexes from Singapore and my Sallies are flown in. And the units from Alor Star retreated to Georgetown and are cut off when I move further South. Imperial guards div and a tank regiment will move to Georgetown to take the base, the 3 other divs and tank regiments will move towards Singapore. Swift has just now begun to move his troops from the East coast of Malaya, it could be too late as I´m moving on the railway while he has to go on roads. It will all come down to a couple of days if I will be earlier at Singapore than the Allied units. Would like to NOT see all those units sitting in Singapore. 4 brigades were moved to Mersing to block my division there, Singapore has reported 20.000 troops. We will see...

History: Completed by Devonport Dockyard.
After commissioning HMS Durban joined the China Station 5th Light Cruiser Squadron in January 1922. In 1928 Durban was transferred to the America and West Indies Station. In 1930 The cruiser returned to the UK. In 1931 Durban joined the South Atlantic Division. By December 1933, Durban was relieved by the heavy cruiser HMS York and returned to the UK. In March 1934, the cruiser left for Gibraltar to join the Mediterranean Fleet. By September 1936 Durban returned to the UK and was placed into reserve

In September 1939, because of the outbreak of war Durban was brought forward for commissioning and joined the 9th Cruiser Squadron in the South Atlantic Command. In March 1940 she was in the Indian Ocean when Durban was transferred to the Far East Fleet based at Singapore where she became a unit of the British Malaysian Force. This consisted of her two sister ships HMS Danae and HMS Dauntless, the unit was formed to keep watch on German merchant ships in the Dutch East Indies harbours, her patrol area was off Padang. November, On 10 November 1940 the Norwegian tanker Ole Jacob (offsite link) reported being shelled midway between Ceylon, and the north end of Sumatra. The German raider Atlantis being named the attacker. The C-in-C East Indies immediately organised a hunting group comprising Durban and the cruisers HMS Capetown, HMAS Canberra and armed merchant cruiser HMAS Westralia. HMAS Canberra was at that time on passage to Australia after escorting a convoy to Bombay. The hunt proved unsuccessful.

In 1941 Durban was still based at Singapore with the cruiser HMS Dragon and tasked in the escorting of the convoys between Singapore and the Sunda Straits. In February, she escorted the Queen Mary from the Sunda Strait to Singapore, they reached their destination on the 18th, carrying the first Australian Imperial Force Troops for Malaya. In November, she escorted the trooper Zealandia from the Sunda Strait to Singapore, after relieving the Australian cruiser HMAS Sydney which had originally left Fremantle. Not long after this Sydney was involved in a skirmish with the German raider Kormoran, when both ships were sunk.

In January 1942 she was in the Dutch East Indies where Durban remained part of the formation of the China Force for convoy duties between Singapore, Sunda Straits and Java. In February while at Keppel Harbour, Singapore, Admiral Layton decided to move the Fleet to Java after the Japanese started their attack on Singapore, it was here where Durban was damaged by bombing, in company with Dragon they travelled at high speed and arrived at Tandjong Priok, the port of Batavia. Later temporary repairs were carried out at Colombo. Full repairs were carried out at New York in April, and further modifications were made in Portsmouth between June and August.

On 5 November 1942, convoy WS-23 arrived in South Africa from the UK with reinforcements, the convoy consisted of 5 ships and escort was provided by Durban and HMS Hawkins.

In February 1943 Durban sailed for New York for permanent repairs. By June the cruiser was docked in the Selborne dry dock at Simonstown, South Africa prior to joining the Eastern Fleet. In November, she returned to the UK to be paid off.

On 9 June 1944 Durban was expended to form part of Gooseberry 5 breakwater for protecting the artificial harbour off Ouistreham in the Seine Bay.
The wreck lies in 11 meters of water in position 49º20'44"N, 00º16'08"W.

You remember that half a dozen CAs bombarded, then two BBs bombarded, then 250 KB bombers attacked Midway and now I have 4 CAs in the invasion TF... RESULT??? As expected my TF gets shot up and the regiment I unload is shredded... Put a CD unit with 10 assault points at an atoll and with the right die rolls you can stop 100 ships unloading 5 divisions...
