Range Check Error

I am getting this as I try to load a scenario. The game fails to load. DXDiag attached.

I remember now that this was an unsolved issue in For Liberty:

tm.asp?m=1327698

I hope that this gets fixed, as it never seemed to have been in the previous game.

Benpark,

Is this a repeatable issue for you whenever you load a scenario, regardless which one?

Regards,

- Erik

If you can find newer sound drivers (your current ones are from 2003), those would be worth updating while you're at it.

Erik-

The error appears every time I attempt to load any given scenario. I have tried them all now. The clock icon appears, and the loading graphic gets a quarter of the way finished and then the error kicks in.

The SoundMax drivers are the only ones for this board that I can find. I did an exhaustive search a few months back, but suggestions are always welcome...

Thanks!

Ben

Thanks for testing that out Ben. It's not an issue we saw at all during testing and I've confirmed it happens on none of our systems with the gold master. As you noted, it may be related to that earlier FL bug and may be somehow system specific. I'm going to ask the developer to chime in here, as I'm not sure how best to proceed.

I'm going to reinstall, and fiddle with the settings a bit. More later...

Okay, things are looking good. I uninstalled NiI, then uninstalled my sound driver. I then restarted, reinstalled both and viola- it works. Thanks for the help, Erik.

I've experienced myself a "range check error" message, which has frozen the game, just in the mid of my first scenario played, during a French bombardment of Mantua in turn 6, month 7 of 1796 scenario. I've tried to switch off the sound, but the error message still occurs. I suspect it may be related to animation of Mantua bombardment effects.

Hi Graf,

Could you please post a DxDiag file for us too? Is this issue repeatable for you from a save file?

Regards,

- Erik

Sorry, but I hate to say that unless this issue is somehow fixed and is not system specific, I don't think I'll be buying NiI.

I'm having this same issue with FL was told by one of the developers that the issue would be fixed in the next patch of FL. I don't want to buy NiI (even though it's killing me!) until this issue is gone from FL.

Wally's World- as soon as they fix this get the game. I have been playing it for a few months now and the playtest team found very few bugs and none of us had this one (but now you and someone else do...). Very stable game, no little errors. I hope Hussar can fix this sound error so you can play this one.

The subtle engine changes suit it well for early Napoleonic figthing and the different campaigns add a lot of replay value. In two months I have only finished two of the main campaigns.

I'm sure there are more errors left over from For Liberty which is one reason i won't buy this game. The other being the total lack of support when they released a broken patch for FL those months ago...when i deleted the game once and for all[8|]. I lived with the little bugs: range check errors, CTD's, frozen tactical combat etc. but that was the last straw. Finish one job before starting another, i've lost count of how many "beta patches" i have for all my Matrix games[:-]...the buck stops here.

The developer is looking into this issue right now folks and as long as we can duplicate it we'll fix it.

I'm not joking when I say this was solid as a rock on the tester systems as well as our internal test systems.

- Erik

That's not entirely fair, Elliot. How many of those were actually necessary for the games vs. previews of upcoming official updates we put up for customers to try "as is" if they wanted while we continued work? That's normally a bonus, not a problem.

- Erik

I have faith in the developers that this issue will be fixed. FL and not NiI are two good games that deserve and are getting good support.

My apologies, my choice of words didn't reflect my thoughts; i appreciate the "beta-patches"...my point is with all the beta patches most games have(@Matrix) this series of games has struggled with the same issues for quite some time and the dev's have , IMHO, been a little flighty.

Please send us the save BEFORE the error occurs.
After you sent us the save, please try the following workaround: load an earlier save (2-3 turns earlier) and try to do something a bit different. Hopefully this will avoid the bug. In any case, we will look into this ASAP.

Napoleon in Italy was in beta testing for over half a year. All bugs reported during the test were fixed.

However, unfortunately software development is a tricky business. This game has about 25000 lines of code. It IS complex, because we try to simulate a lot of things. The AI itself is over 10000 lines of code. When a large player base starts to play a game, there will be new bugs that appear. This is true for all games that are out there, especially complex ones. We rarely have reports from testers or players about frequent crashes, so if you encounter a lot of bugs, that is likely either a compatibility issue or just plain bad luck. Try to upgrade your video and sound drivers.

And as for that bad patch we released for FL, that is unfortunately true. We screwed that up royally and we are really sorry about it. Especially painful that I was out of office after the release and could not fix right away.

I've enclosed via e-mail the latest save before error occurs. As said in the thread, I've already tried to switch off effects and music, but error occurred again, freezing game and compelling to a restart.
Thanks for any help.
