April of 42?
Not much you can up to this point in time IMO. I, myself, have no shame in waiting to go on the offensive with the allies. You have plenty of time and your opponent in bound to make a mistake.
Regarding the DEI, it all depends on how it is attacked. If the Japanese do an effective job at surrounding Java, then it becomes a death trap. If they attack from the only the north it is pretty easy to defend, falling back to Oz. You can really make them pay then.

But after reading countless AAR's I think I'm playing too passive. Is this the case?
Maybe, but not necessarily. Tough to know without more info. IRL the US didn't go onto the offensive until August, and that was after Midway. At the same time, the more aggressive a Jap offensive is, the more weak points there are to exploit. In one game I re-took Canton Island in Feb '42.
What are the total air losses? It looks like you're doing very well there. Do you know where KB is?
At this date the Japanese no longer have their invasion bonus, and the Zero bonus is negligible. However they still can concentrate more force than you wherever they want. But they can't do that everywhere. With as much territory as your opponent has taken he's probably weak on the ground all over the South Pacific. Since you hold Fiji, but not Pago-Pago, I'd consider trying to grab that back on the cheap. So long as KB's not near...
Well, good luck! [:)]

Looks like his IJN pilot pool is hurting badly. Also, you've put a respectable early dent in his naval assets. As a Japanese player I would hate to lose 11 DDs this early in the war, and really hate to lose those APDs. If I were you I would keep on doing what you're doing for a bit longer until you have some more material and technological gain to play with.
You can always choose to be more aggressive now and gain more for less, but you could also lose a lot more for nothing.
Advice one way or the other may not matter, you're playing another brain, who knows what it will do exactly?

It seems to me that he has Fiji isolated, what with his holding both Pago Pago and Noumea. Have you protected Christmas Island and Bora Bora? I think that I would secure these two bases (and any supporting bases) before attempting an offensive in the eastern Pacific.
If he has Pago Pago too heavily built up for an early war invasion to succeed, you might try isolating it by grabbing Upolu and Savaii.

Important Planes lost
Zero-410
Betty-344
Oscar-160
Kate-133
Val-128
Nell 87
Sally-83
Helen-30
P40E-88
Curtis (AVG)-66
P40B-64
Buffalo-53
F4F3 42
P40C-30
Hurricane-27
I am quite curious, are those all A2A losses, or do they include; destroyed on the ground, flak, and Ops?

Thanks for the breakdown.
Something is amiss, Japanese fighter losses A2A are too high.
How many Japanese fighters did the AVG knock off by themselves? (if you have the data to look at)

They are an aggregate of all losses,
Zeros and fighters are mostly A2A
Betty's and most bombers mostly from flak
I did not include the other plane types.

I've seen this in CHS 2.08 scenario 160 too. This can happen when the Japanese player pushes his airforce too hard. By too hard I mean the pilots are under high fatigue and fly extended range missions over a span of a few days.
I had one instance where my opponent handed a bunch of experience to Chinese pilots flying CAP over Chungking. He flew continuous sweep missions for over a week out of Hue. It was quite funny (to me) to see the Chinese tear up those A6M2 squadrons.

Wow! that's a lot of Zeros lost in a couple of Days!
I have never seen more than perhaps 20 to 30 Zeros lost in the first two days of air attacks, usually about a dozen at PH and about the same at Clark....not counting Op losses.

I can only say they have 124 kills. The exact breakdown I did not ever save. But it is mostly Zero's with a smattering of Oscar's and maybe a Betty or two.
One thing I did note in this game was on Dec 8th there was 134 Zero's shot down between Pearl and the Phillipines. I think alot were lost over PH as were most of the Val's and Kates.
